THE Pendulum Volume XXi Number 11 Informing the Elon College Community November 16,1995 Homecoming spirit not drowned out by rain Stacey Ward Staff Reporter Members of the homecoming court stood patiently in the wind and rain as they awaited the results for king and queen on Saturday at Walter Williams High School. Rain blew from every direction as Carollyn Messinetti, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, andZuni Johnson, AOFI’s sweet heart, were crowned king and queen at half- time. Barbara Plumblee, faculty representa tive for AOn, was chosen as overall faculty representative. The overall cartoon-mania homecom ing winner from the 20 organizations who participated was Alpha Zeta Delta with 255 points. “It was only our fourth homecoming. We had a lot of fun with it,” Racheal Lee, a member of AHA said. A5A put in a lot of hard work. There were different people working on different things, Lee said. Zeta Tau Alpha’s banner, which fea tured Mickey Mouse, won the banner com petition. Alpha Sigma Alpha won Thursday’s theme night with their Alice in Wonderland skit with the football team. It replaced last year’s skit night. The organizations involved were able to show off their talent through a skit, dance or song. Though SGA has not tallied up how much was raised from the penny drive, the proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity. As homecoming queen and king. National honor society accepts Elon as chapter 'I Jennifer Pippin Reporter Elon College became home to the 275th chapter of the na tional honor society Phi Kappa Phi after its induction ceremony Tuesday. Phi Kappa Phi is a unique and prestigious society, which recog nizes individuals who have had excellent performance in all aca demic disciplines. The society was founded in 1897 and has chap ters in institutions from Maine to the Philippines and from Alaska to Puerto Rico. Elon College students in ducted into Phi Kappa Phi will have a chance to compete with individuals from other schools within the society for various aca demic scholarships. Wendell McKenzie, South eastern Regional Vice-President of Phi Kappa Phi, gave the intro duction to students and faculty. He said that even though 30,000 to 35,000 members will be inducted this year across the coun try, the society is still one of high stature. He urged the inductees not to be misled. Phi Kappa Phi is not an "honorary" society, but an ’’honor" society. Highest Ranking Senior Ini tiate Shannon Prater spoke to the inductees about the hard work it takes to earn membership. "I don’t know too many of y ou who can honestly say, Tve not had to lift a finger... because it has all fallen in my lap/” Prater said. Eton’s chapter initiated 78 stu dents and four faculty members including Martha Coe Friddle, Julianne Maher, William G. Rich, and John G. Sullivan. Sixteen Elon charter members also received cer tificates at the ceremony. “It is an honor to be inducted, y Phi Kappa Phi charter member and psychology Professor Paul Fromson receives his certificate from Wendell McKenzie. and really all you have to do is keep your grades up,” said Laura Eason, a new Phi Kappa Phi mem ber. The criteria for membership into the Phi Kappa Phi Society is based on academic excellence, good character, and achievement in scholarship of whatever field the individual is studying. The primary objective of Phi Kappa Phi is the recognition and encour agement of superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Soliday ventures on, bids fond farewell to college Adam Kriss Staff Reporter After more than 18 years of commitment to Elon College, Di rector of alumni and parent rela tions Joanne Soliday is going back to her roots and accepting a posi tion at her alma mater. Soliday decided a week ago to accept the position of vice presi dent for institutional advancement at West Virginia Wesleyan. She begins her new job Jan. 15. “West Virginia Wesleyan is the one place I could work at other than at Elon,” Soliday said. At Wesleyan, she will be in volved with alumni and parent re lations and fund-raising events. “I consider this the biggest position I’ve ever held,” she said. Soliday will also be respon sible for all external relations, pub lications and media contact. She will handle alumni and parent rela tions, annual spending, foundations and gifts, and the capital gifts pro gram. “It will be a great loss because she’s such a dynamic leader,” said Stephanie Aycock, assistant direc tor of the annual support program. Co-workers agreed that Soliday will be missed. “She has very strong adminis trative, organizational and manage ment skills. Therefore, she’s been a real strengthening factor at a time of reorganization,” said Frances McKenzie, associate director of the annual support program. At Elon, Soliday is also the director of the annual support pro gram, which includes raising money for the annual fund. This fund sup ports the college’s general budget. Soliday also helps with the phone- a-thon. “The director of alumni and parent relations is really the fund raising position of the college,” Soliday said. See Soliday, Page 4.
