Online research offers students guide to the net Tonya Hubart Senior Reporter An online research class is being offered by the communications department this semester. The one hour credit class is four two-hour seminars and a visit to The News and Observer. The seminars are being conducted by Bruce Siceloff, new media editor at The News ana Observer, and Teresa Leonard, research depart ment staff member at The News and Observer. The seminars are Feb. 29, March 14, April 11, and April 25 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. If anyone wants to attended one particulai seminar, it can be accommodated, George Padgett, head of the communications depart ment said. The department offers seminar classes ev ery spring, rotating between communication fields. The ’rush' is on at Elon Tonya Hubart Senior Reporter Formal rush for sororities starts this weekend. But, what is it? “Rush is a mutual selection process. Women chose a sorority that they want to be a member of and sororities chose women they want as members,” Amanda Harless, head of greek life said. “It’s called rush because you rush from one activity to another,” Harless said. The week-long process starts Sunday with convocation. “Con vocation is orientation to the pro gram. It tells them what to expect and teaches wellness, how to bal ance academics, health and rush,” Harless said. The last day to sign up for rush is Sunday. There is a $20 registration fee which has doubled since last year. “The fee is more because Pan- hellenic provides food for the girls and the rush booklet we give out costs more,” said Harless. You must have a 2.25 GPA (See Sorority Rush Page 4) Men's Rush Men’s rush begins Saturday with convocation from noon until 2:00 p.m. in Whitley auditorium. Sunday is open house for all the fraternities. It will be in second floor Alamance. Each fraternity is in a room and rushees go from room to room. Rush parties are Feb. 12- 22. Each fraternity has two, two-hour parties. Men’s rush is less structured than sorority rush. The “Jesus at 2000” confer ence brings together six scholars to discuss the issue from a variety of perspectives. The conference will be fed via satellite to Elon tomor row and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, beginning at 11 a.m. The event, sponsored by the Religious Life Office, is open to all students and faculty. Petitions for elections are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 14. A mandatory meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The petitions are available in the SGA office, 231 Moseley Center. Positions on the Executive staff, the At Large Council and the Academic Council are available. Elections have been held in March in the past. Because of up coming budget hearings, the new budgeting system and executive job training, election dates are scheduled earlier said Election Committee Chair Matt Bel^di. The SGA elections may have "rear* booths, Belardi said. This would make it easier to count the votes and make voting more con fidential.
