It gave students a chance to visit the national politi cal conventions. Seventeen Elon students at tend either the Republican National Convention or the Democratic National Convention. Brumbaugh taught for the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars Campaign ‘96, a seminar convention program. The two week program is di vided into two parts. During the first week, stydents listened to speakers, had small group sessions and visited various locations. Managing Editor Martin Chadwick and Russ Johnson didn’t see it coming. But the two Elon students man aged to avoid a dark Chevrolet rac ing onto the front lawn of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity house during the early morning of Aug. 30. The driver of the car, Marcus Walker, 22, of 1113 Dixie St., Burlington, allegedly rammed his car into a party crowd of about 20- 30 people about 1:40 a.m. Walker is not a student at Elon. Police said Walker was ar rested moments after the alleged incident and charged with driving while impaired. Police Lt. D.K. Agnew, who headed the investigation at the Kappa Alpha house, later charged Walker with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious in jury and two counts of felonious hit and run. He remains in jail on a $50,500 secured bond. Walker is scheduled to make a first appearance tomor row in district Court in Graham. Chadwick and Johnson, who were treated for injuries at Alamance Regional Medical Cen ter, said they don’t recall much about the alleged incident. “We were standing around on see ASSAULT, page 4 Freshmen Elections Around the Comer Andrea Stoffer Students may be researching and observing the candidates for the presidential election of the United States. However, do not forget about the determined Elon freshmen competing for class presi dent, class vice president, class sec retary/ treasurer, or the six senator positions. At noon, on Sept. 9, all completed applications will be ac cepted. As of Tuesday night, the fol lowing freshmen arc candidates for the Student Government Associa tion elections. Candidates for fresh man class president are the follow ing: Beth Murphy, C. Nicole Hood, Liz Tuttle, Maurice Gardner, Erin Jochim, Jude Dooley, and Jason McMerty. Candidates for freshman class vice president: Emily Gatewood, Dena Gregory, Josh Yenchick, and Jill Czarkowski. . Candidates for freshman class senate: Amanda Peterson, Laura Griffin, Shemika Stanley, Jen Geurin, Natalie K.V. Mutz, Marixa Jones, and Corbie Meadows. There will be a mandatory meeting for all those people on the ballot. It is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. If candidates do not attend the meeting their name will be re moved from the ballot unless they have contacted the SGA Elections Chair before that time. Freshman elections arc sched uled to be held Sept. 10-11 on first floor Moseley Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Obligations of class officers and senators arc the following: weekly SGA meetings— every Thursday at 5:15 p.m. (Moseley 215), class meetings— as sched uled by the class, active committee and council participation and at tendance at all SGA sponsored ac tivities.
