President Bill Clinton is the one Democrat to be re elected for a second term since Franklin D. Roosevelt. Clinton dashed Bob Dole’s hopes of being the next President when he earned a big lead in the electoral college, early Tuesday night. The late-night unofficial returns showed Clinton winning by a large margin. Clinton gathered 32 states as well as the District of Columbia for a total of 377 electoral votes. Dole collected 19 states, including North Carolina and his home state of Kansas, for a total of only 156 total electoral votes. Independent candidate Ross Perot did not carry any states but did win eight percent of the popular vote. Perot did not attain his double digit goal in the popular vote as he predicted he would. “We will make the 21st century the best we can but we’ve got to keep the pressure on,” Perot said late Tuesday night. About an hour after Clinton was announced as the projected winner of the presidential race. Dole issued a statement of concession which he later retracted saying that “he conceded nothing.” “I’m very proud that we managed to keep control of the Senate and the House,” Dole said in his late night concession speech. At deadline, Clinton had 50 percent of the popular vote while Dole had 42 percent. iKKImlKmliSm Andrew Brickey/7ne Pendulum Showing Spirit Among the many activities planned for students and alumni last weekend was the parade Saturday morning on Haggard Aveune (top) and a pep rally for the football team Friday night at the Fouville Foutains. Haggard Ave. The warrant claimed that there was substantial evidence to lead them to believe there would be a large amount of drugs at the resi dence. A claim of “excessive force and unnecessarily aiming guns at students” was made by seniors Lynn Terrell and Mara Birnbaum. All other witnesses interviewed con cur. According to Dan Ingle, chief of police. Town of Elon College, “During a drug raid, guns are to be unholstered and at low quarters, in other words, aimed at the floor.” “I have some reports from some people that there was one particular officer that was pointing a gun at people. That’s under investiga tion,” Ingle said. One student at the party, se nior Dave Kieman, was removed from the house on a stretcher and spent the night in a hospital. He was X-rayed and also underwent a Catscan during his stay. Police said he passed out dur ing the raid. Kiernan said, “I was on my hands and knees and I was like, ‘Look, the floor is wet. I’m on the floor.' I couldn’t even finish my sentence and I just remember get ting struck on the head. And the next thing I know I’m in the hospi tal.” Kieman said he has suffered migraines since the incident and has a sore spot behind his right ear. Ingle spoke to the emergency room physician the following morn ing and said, “He didn’t find any bruising or bumps or contusions or anything to indicate that he had been struck by anything. Sophomore Alex Kongkraphun, 19, a resident of the house, said, “They hit him behind the neck. It was so fast that I couldn’t tell if it was the butt of a shotgun or a flashlight or a nightstick.” Kongkraphun was charged with simple possession of mari juana and possession of drug para phernalia. Two others, Matthew Egan, 21, and Allison Rutledge, 19, were also arrested at the house and charged with “resist, delay, ob struct.” According to the police, the search was made after a “reliable source” said there was blatant use of LSD, marijuana and Rufinol at the house.
