6 May 1,1997 News A Day With Elon President Fred Young Michelle Cater Asst. Managing Editor He walked into his office a few minutes after 9 a.m. and greeted his office staff as one of his secretaries got him a cup of coffee. It’s the start of another day for Elon College President Fred Young. Friday, April 25, was in many ways a normal day for Young. Af ter arriving at the office he and his secretary Sandra Fields went over his itinerary for the day, discussing whom he needed to meet with and whom he needed to call. He spent the next 45 minutes dictating a memo to the Board of Trustees concerning the recent visit of F.W. de Klerk and deciding which news articles to send the members of the Board. Young and Fields also drafted an itinerary for the upcoming Board of Trustees executive committee meeting. A little after 9:30 a.m.. Nan Perkins, dean of admissions and financial planning, stopped into Young’s office to give her weekly report of the incoming freshman class and how many acceptances had been given and how many de posits had been paid in the past week. “She does this every week,” Young said. “I really like to be kept up-to-date on admissions.” At 10 a.m. Young had his first appointment of the day. He met with Perkins and the two marketing consultants who visited Elon last week. During the meeting Young shared what he considers to be Elon’s “distinctive characteristics” with the consultants. He also shared some ofhis future dreams for Elon. Some of these dreams include re quiring all students to pass a writ ing and computer competency test and creating a Spanish immersion program to help all students be come more fluent in the language. “One of the things I’ve found is that when I propose something (like the Spanish program) people tend to consider it a done deal,” Young told the consultants with a smile. “These are just ideas I have.” “I would say about 95 percent of my work is thinking, about 5 percent is coming to conclusions.” Young, Perkins and the con sultants also briefly discussed the marketing advantages and disad vantages associated with Elon be coming a university. Around 11:30 a.m. Provost Gerry Francis met with Young. Since personal reasons had called Young away from Elon for a while Francis took this time to update Young on some of the events that happened during his absence. Francis started by discussing some final details of graduation and the arrival of the commence ment speaker. Next, Francis in formed Young of the upcoming Big South and South Atlantic Con ference receptions and dinners, and the two men made plans to attend. The final portion of this meet ing was spent discussing the build ing projects on campus and the progress made. Francis informed Young that due to budget difficul ties, some minor modifications may have to be made in the plans for the science building. Francis added that construction had begun and was progressing on schedule so far. Francis also told Young that the construction of the new Greek houses was on schedule, and then they discussed the possibility of painting the old houses sometime before next fall. After his meeting with Francis, Young headed home to have lunch with his wife Phyllis. Young returned to Elon around 1:30 p.m. After arriving back on campus he headed over to Alumni Gym to view the AIDS Memorial Quilt. While at the exhibit Young spoke with Kathy Lyday-Lee and Michael Ulrich, as well as a mem-, ber of Alamance Cares, and thanked them for their hard work in bring ing the Quilt to Elon. “It was a very powerful expe rience,” Young said about the Quilt. After visiting the Quilt, Young returned to the office. He and Fields spent the next few hours going over his notes and expense report from Young’s recent visit to China and Japan. Young also dictated letters to officials at the schools he visited. Young had to leave the office shortly after 3 p.m. because of an off-campus appointment. On most days, Young ends his time at the office learning Spanish. Young, along with four other students including his wife and sec retary, are taking Spanish from a private tutor. “I’m still a student,” Young said. Young said that most days he also spends the evening on campus attending an event like a choir con cert or lecture.
