Elon is hosting several holiday activities for students as well as for the entire community. Students can relax and enjoy some baked goodies at the Maynard house. President Fred Young and wife Phyllis are inviting all stu dents to join them at their house from 4-6 p.m. today for the third annual Holiday Reception. “This is a wonderful opportu nity for students to chat with Dr. and Mrs. Young,” said Helen Ellington, coordinator of special events. Students are encouraged to use the shuttle service that will run to and from the Moseley parking lot and the Maynard house. Pendulum F.Y.I 26. Dean of Students Smith Jack son said approximately 20 people received sanctions of some kind. Jackson said the sanctions given to the individuals depended on what conduct violations they had committed. The violations were being under the influence of alco hol and fighting. More than 70 people, mostly members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Lambda Chi Alpha frater nities, were involved in the fight. Jackson said the presidents of these groups, as well as the president of the Interfraternity Council, assisted him in finding out which individu als were involved. “I probably would not have known the individuals involved as well without the fraternities in volvement,” Jackson said. see FIGHT, page 5 m rW, SGA has no comment on Hayes hearing Julie Koch Copy Editor Despite making a decision, members of the Student Govern ment Association’s judicial com mittee have decided not to com ment on the guilt or innocence of a senator accused of abusing senato rial duties. The SGA held a formal hear ing on Nov. 24 concerning the charges brought up against junior Ashley Hayes. All signs indicate that Hayes will be impeached from the SGA, but the organization has refused to publicly release the de cision. Hayes was accused of tamper ing with the ballots for the 1997 Homecoming King and Queen elec tions, an SGA-sponsored event. Like the informal hearing, those present included five mem bers of the judicial committee, SGA Adviser Barbara Carlton and the accused. The formal meeting, how ever, was closed to the media. Hayes said she was asked to give information on Sarah Petelik’s involvement, if any, and whether she was aware that Hayes had al legedly obtained an extra stack of ballots. “They didn’t ask me any ques tions that were really relevant,” Hayes said. see HAYES, page 5 L
