News February 12,1998 5 Changes in Elon College under Dr. Young Dr. Young has been Elon's president since before most current Elon students were born. Here is a brief look at some of the changes Young presided over. • Construction of Fonville Fountain • The enroHment has more than doubled • Addition of Masters in Education, Masters in Business Administration and Master in Physical Therapy programs • Creation of "Elon Experiences" — study abroad, vohmteer services, leadership develop ment, internships • Expanded campus to more than 500 acres • Change in General Studies curriculum and expanded class to four hour system • Construction of the Model Center for the Arts, the Koury Center, the Moseley Center,the Story Center, Jordan Center and East Campus apart ments. • Move to Division I athletics • The start of construction of the new science building and securing of the money for the new library and stadium • Elon was ranked 19 out of 123 Southern col leges and universities by U.S. News & World Report in 1998 Photo courtesey College Relations President Young addresses the faculty and staff at the faculty meeting on Friday. from YOUNG, page 1 Chairman of the Board of Trust ees Robert LaRose said, “Fred Young has provided extraordinary leadership for the college. His en ergy, vision and commitment to the institution and the students it serves have created an amazing legacy.” “It’s going to be a real chal lenge to find a successor,” Special Assistant to the President Jo Watts Williams said. “(Young has) tremendous vi sion and energy that has placed the college in the forefront of higher education.” Elon College has changed dra matically in the almost 25 years of Young’s presidency. The enroll ment has more than doubled and expanded the geographic appeal of Elon. Coordinator of Cultural Pro grams George Troxler said that while the increase in enrollment and the quality of students Elon attracts is one of Young’s most obvious accomplishments he does not think it is Young’s greatest. “I think the way we perceive ourselves is his greatest accom plishment,” said Troxler, who was teaching history at Elon when Young began his presidency “He has given us a sense of self. The college perceives itself in a very different way. The college is better than we thought ourselves to be in 1973.” Elon has also added masters programs in physical therapy, busi ness and education as well as com munications and computer science majors. The changes in Elon have not just been academic. The campus has “ expanded from 145 to more than 500 acres. Among the build ings constructed under Young’s supervision are the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts, the Koury Center, Jordan Cen ter and Moseley Center. “Dr. Young has strategically placed the college in the position to reach greater achievement in the coming years,” said Williams.
