Academic ethos to be discussed at
campus-wide summit on Saturday
Kendal Guinn
Pendulum Reporter
On Saturday, April 4, Elon
College will engage in its first Sum
mit on the Learning Community.
This summit is a reflection ofElon’s
atmosphere which focuses prima
rily on academics.
When survey results showed
that freshmen do not feel challenged
academically at Elon some concerns
came up. With these concerns in
mind, the administration felt action
had to be taken.
“There is a faculty sense that
students are not giving as much to
their academic pursuits as organi
zational ones,” Vice President of
Academic Affairs Julianne Maher
said.
The administration decided
that students and faculty needed to
discuss this issue. So, the idea of an
academic summit came up.
A1 Carpenter, a member of
the summit planning committee,
said that although this is not a quick
fix, people feel that this could lead
to affirmations about the standards
ofElon’s academic standing.
The summit has been in the
planning since January, when a
steering committee met seven times
and planned some activities leading
up to the summit.
There are six major topics
which the summit will discuss. They
are ethics, evaluation, balancing
time, ways of learning, outcomes,
and valuing the journey. Each of
these topics has been given to a
small working group, which have
been meeting to discuss both fac
ulty and students issues.
These issues will be discussed
with the student body and faculty
and as Carpenter says, “we’ll go
from there.”

Kelly Dynan enjoys the warm spring weather and works on her tan
while catching up oniier reading. Many Elon students took advantage
of the start of spring to catch a little sun and spend time outside.
Walking to class and back from your apartment
can be miserable for some people, but the Student
Government Association (SGA) and the school ad
ministration are trying to remedy that problem.
A new program is in the works which will have
buses pick up students at designated stops around the
Elon College area. A few of these stops will be
located near Weatherby, Ashley Oaks and East Cam
pus Apartments.
The program is scheduled to begin on April 8
and will last until the 24. Paid for by the school, the
shuttles will run Monday through Friday, 7:30 to

Students get caught up in SURF
Julie Koch
News Editor
After months, or in some cases
years, of preparation, students will
present their Student Undergradu
ate Research Forum (SURF)
projects Wednesday, April 8.
Projects will be divided into
two categories: presentations and
posters. The firstcategory will con
sist of a twelve minute oral presen
tation with a five minute period for
questions from the audience. How
ever, students who are participating
in the poster category will just be
available next to their visuals for
questions.
Chemistry professor Jo
Grimley, co-coordinator of this
year’s SURF, said the forum will be
set up similar to that of a national
conference in order for the students
to receive any necessary training.
Anyone interested in the pro
gram can submit their research;
however, changes to be more selec
tive with the selection process are
being looked into.
The first SURF was started
by Grimley and Rosalind Reichard,
dean of sciences and math, who
decided after attending a national
conference that it would be benefi
cial to “highlightundergraduate re
search” at Elon.
Preparations then began for
undergraduates to share their work
with Elon faculty and students.
While less than 20 students
participated in Elon's first SURF, it
has since grown into a campus-
wide, academic calendar event with
over 70 participants.
“We are pleased as SURF has
become a very important part for
the recruiting of Elon,” said
