Presidential search underway
Michelle Cater
Editor in Chief
The search committee for
Elon’s next president has been se
lected by Robert LaRose, the chair
man of the Board of Trustees.
The committee consists of
seven trustees, two faculty mem
bers, two staff members and a stu
dent.
“We tried to appoint mem
bers reflecting a variety of strengths
such as in-state, out-of-state and a
range of trustee experience and lead
ership,” Noel Allen, chairman of
the search committee, said.
When selecting members for
the committee, Allen said they
looked for people who were objec
tive and who had good judgment
and a dedication to Elon.
Sara Peterson, the executive
assistant to the search committee,
said that confidentiality and trust
worthiness were also important.
The search committee is to
present its selection to the Board of
Trustees at their fall meeting. The
Board will make the final decision.
“That is the committee’s chal
lenge: to find a new president with
the potential to take Elon at least the
same distance (as President Young)
on the path of excellence,” Allen
said.
“The Elon Search Commit
tee has to find someone to follow
one of the best college presidents in
the country. We may search around
the world or strike gold in our own
backyard. Regardless, we owe it to
Elon to have a search process that
inspires the community’s confi
dence in the committee’s recom
mendation.”
The search process has al
ready begun. Barbara Taylor, a

Preparations for the opening of the new Centre
de Espanol, which is located on the first floor of the
Moseley Center, are underway.
Sylvia Munoz, the director for the Centre, said
the Centre will be open during the summer, however,
the formal opening of the Centre will be in the fall.
The purpose of the Centre is to provide students,
faculty and staff with an informal setting to practice
and learn Spanish.
Munoz said the Centre will have CD-ROMs,
books and a TV for watching Spanish videos. The
Centre will provide individual tutoring and group learn
ing sessions.
The Centre will also sponsor cultural events,
dinners and other activities to enhance the learning
experience.

Transition Tactics wins national award
Carolyn Lampila
Pendulum Reporter
Elon College’s Transition
Tactics program recently won a na
tional award.
Each August before classes
begin, rising seniors have the op
portunity to engage in a three day
program that will help them move
into the “real world.”
The Career Services Depart
ment meets with the participating
students and discusses what they
would like to do, then spends the
summer trying to match up student
with employer.
During the first day of the
program, the students attend sev
eral workshops that teach them re
sume writing, interviewing skills
and etiquette, just to name a few.
They also have discussions with a
panel of employers or alumni. For
the next two days of the program,
the students shadow someone in
their career choice.
Students, faculty and the Ca
reer Services Department all have
positive things to say about Transi
tion Tactics. Obviously, so did the
