September 3,1998 Profile Lamar Bland still a devoted Elon fan after 30 years Ashley Brown The Pendulum When Lamar Bland first began teach ing at Elon College in 1967, could he have possibly imagined over three decades later he would still be at the same college teaching English courses? Probably not. However, here it is, 1998,.and he is still at Elon. Although a lot has changed since the time when he first arrived. Bland still loves his job today as much as he ever did. After receiving his Bachelors degree in Philosophy from Wake Forest and getting his Masters in British Literature from the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 1960s, Bland was offered a teaching posi tion at Elon even before he had received his Ph.D. He later received his Ph.D. in Ameri can Literature from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During the 1970s, Bland began to get involved in some administrative work as well as the Honors Department. Today he is again concentrating primarily on aca demics, teaching courses that range from College Writing 110 to a class solely on Hemingway and his works to another on gender issues in novels and the cinema. Bland has also had numerous articles published on his work dealing with fiction novels and gender issues. He has continued to teach at Elon for so long because of the atmosphere the school has and the opportunities that have arisen while he has been teaching here. Bland believes that Elon has an advan tage over many other colleges because of its committed faculty who take the time to work more with the students than larger colleges and universities. He is impressed by the huge steps Elon has taken in the last thirty years to improve the academics for the students and believes that in the future “we as faculty can do even more to make our disciplines connect with the lives of the students.” In the future, Bland is hoping to write a book that ties together his beliefs and per sonal experiences. However, for now, he is happy simply teaching and spending time with his wife, who is an episcopal priest, and his three children. Write for The Pendulum!
