October 15, 1998 yiewjyoint Early yesterday afternoon the Elon College Board of Trustees announced that Leo Lambert would become Elon’s eighth president. While following in the footsteps of President Young will certainly be a big task for anyone, we feel that Lambert is very able for the task that lies ahead and would like to welcome him to the college. When Elon began its search for a new leader, The Pendulum wrote a Viewpoint describing the characteristics that were necessary for our next president. We feel that Lambert has many of these qualities and many more that will help him lead Elon College into the national spotlight and will help other people see Elon College for the institution that we already know it is. We feel that Dr. Lambert will be both open-minded and patient enough to see Elon, both the people and the school, for what they really are and will not try to force us into becoming the Elon College that he feels we need to be. Having been a college newspaper man himself, we are confi dent that Dr. Lambert will continue the Elon tradition of a free student press and will give his support to the work of not just The Pendulum, but WSOE, ESTV, Colonnades and Phi Psi CIL With his dedication to and background in faculty development, we trust Dr. Lambert will continue to improve the quality of the already outstanding Elon faculty and will strengthen the overall academic climate of the college. Based on all we know of the presidential search and the presidential candidates. The Pendulum firmly believes that the search committee and the Board of Trustees made the right decision for the college’s future in selecting Dr. Leo Lambert as Elon’s eighth president The Pendulum staff would like tatake this chance to welcome Dr. Lambert to the Elon College family. We hope you and your family enjoy your time at Elon and we look forward to working with you. You have giant shoes to fill^ but we have every confidence in you and your abilities. • The Pendulum editorial staff Opinions Informing the Elon College Community Editor in Chief Michelle Cater News Editor Julie Koch Features Editor Giselle Pole Sports Editor Cnrissie Taylor Asst. Following our visit two weeks ago, Laurie and I boarded the plane back to Wisconsin with a sense of elation about our visit and the “fit” that seemed to exist between the College and us. I also left campus with a feeling of humbleness, because the President is entrusted with a great treasure of an institution and a strong academic community dedicated to the development of students. Over the course of the next 10 weeks I plan to make several return visits to campus to work closely with President Young to ensure a smooth and orderly transition in the Office of the President. Following Dr. Young’s very successful 25-year career at Elon College will be a great challenge indeed, but with your patience and help, I know that we will continue to move Elon College forward by working together. Laurie, Callie, Mollie, and I are anticipating our move to North Carolina with joy. We are eager to establish ourselves as members of a very special community of students, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni and friends. We look forward to many opportunities to greet you in per son in the coming months. With warm wishes, Leo M. Lambert President-elect
