Sports November 5,1998 19 Fightin' Christian Sports Briefs Troy Adams Chrissie Taylor The Pendulum Volleyball (11-18) The Elon College volleyball team defeated North Carolina A&T and Charleston Southern last week to avenge losses to the two teams earlier in the season. The team tried to make it an undefeated week, but fell short to Coastal Carolina 3-1 on Saturday. On Tuesday, in the 3-2 vic tory against A&T, Katie Ruoff led the team with 23 kills. The Lady Aggies were behind 0-2 before win ning the next two games and taking the Lady Christians into their eighth five-game match of the season. Elon trailed 10-8 in the final game, before scoring seven unanswered points to end a three-game losing skid. Women’s Soccer (7-8-2) The Elon College women’s soccer team dropped a pair of road matches last week at UNC Wilmington and Georgia to end their season. Against Georgia, the Bulldogs (12-5-1) scored four goals in the first half and two in the second en route to a 6-2 win over the Fightin’ Christians. Elon’s two goals came from sophomore Erin Morse, giving her the team scoring title with 18 points, three ahead of freshman Mackenzie Sisson. The team opened the week with a 3-0 loss to UNC-W. The Seahawks scored all three of their goals in the second half. Men’s Soccer (5-12-1) Elon fell to Radford Univer sity 5-3 in the season-finale for the Fightin’ Christians. The Highland ers, who had already clinched the Big South conference champion ship, improved to 11-3-3. Elon’s goals came from Drew Cheldelin, Duran Martin and Chad Heinicke. The team met Clemson Octo- ber28,resultingina7-l loss. Duran Martin had the lone goal for the Christians against the No. 2 ranked Tigers. Cross-Country The Fightin’ Christians ended their 1998 season at the Big South Conference Championships Satur day. In the men’s 8K race^ Josh Cotter ended a superb collegiate career by placing 24th with a time of 27:10. In the women’s 5K race, Lydia Gould led the team with a time of 21:09, good for 43rd place. Kari Spiker was named to the Big South All-Academic team, but wasn’t eligible for the Scholar Ath lete of the Year award accolades. Men’s Golf Todd Grassi carded a two- day total of 148 to lead Elon to a 14th place finish at the 19th annual ODU/Seascape Collegiate Golf Tournament. The tournament was won by host Old Dominion, who set a tour nament record by firing a team score of559, breaking the old mark of 564. Women’s Golf Laura Orlen fired a 161 total to finish tied for 25th and lead Elon to a lOth-place finish at the James Madison Invitational. Orlen fin ished 11 shots behind Yale’s Kate Fisher (77-73=150) for medalist honors. Beth Frace finished tied for 36th at 165 (83-82) for the Fightin’ Christians in their last match of the season. Offense or Defense?! Troy Adams The Pendulum “Offense wins games!” “Defense wins games!” “Offense put the points on the board!” “A good defense is the best offense!” I had to watch and listen to this as “Gertrude” (the name has been changed to protect the one involved) tried to pass the time away waiting for her computer to un freeze (not thaw). She was making puppets with her hands and arguing back and forth with them. Both her left and right hand have a point, though, in regard to Elon’s football team. The Fightin’ Christians of fensive unit has outscored oppo nents in the last five games 173- 128. The defense has helped pro vide the offense with a number of interceptions, sacks, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. Steven Ferguson has rushed for touchdowns in six straight games. Mario Thompson has made five interceptions in the last three games. No one wins this argument. And no one wants to - it means the team is clicking, nearly “running on all cylinders.” Elon avenged a 41-9 loss to Liberty last year - its worst of ‘97- with the 36-14 win Saturday. The team must win its last two games to pull out a second consecutive winning season. To do that, Elon must defeat Western Carolina on the road. The Fightin’ Christians defeated West ern Carolina 17-16 last year thanks to a 78-yard TD pass from Moore to Jerry Wallace with 2:27 remaining. Kelly Forrest then blocked a poten tial game-winning field goal attempt with :17 remaining in the game to preserve the Homecoming win. In the final game of the ‘98 season, the Homecoming matchup, Elon must also avenge a loss to Samford, who burned the Fightin’ Christians for 46 points (the most in ‘97), for a 14-point win. Samford will travel to Burlington Memorial Stadium, where Elon is 3-1. As long as “Gertrude’s” hands can keep arguing about which is doing the most, offense or defense, then the better chance Elon has to go 4-1 at home, 6-5 overall.
