&E November 12, 1998 11 Comics bring a taste of to Homecoming '98 Johannah Lawrence The Pendulum This weekend Elon College 'vill celebrate Homecoming and the festivities planned will give stu dents to reunite with alumni. Among the events planned are two comedi ans, MaryEllen Hooper and Harry I^Basil, who >111 perform On Saturday, Nov. 14, at 9 p.m. in McCrary Theatre. Both Comedians have impres sive back grounds in the comedy field. Hooper made her de but on “Thi Tonight Show with Jay Leno,’ and has beer in high de- niand in the College cir cuit ever since. Her career began in 1985 when she moved to New York City to pursue a stand-up comedy career. After her first performance, she was hooked and has stayed with the profession throughout the years. However, success did not come quickly and Hooper was forced to consider other means of work. For a few years, she worked as a “rolling billboard,” wearing an orange jumpsuit, helmet and skates advertising food prod ucts around New York. She also worked as a hairdresser in FAO Schwartz’s salon cut ting hair for children. As for her future plans. Hooper wants , to perform on television. B a- sil, the other co median that will per form, has worked on an array of projects with famed comic Rodney Dangerfield as well as many others. Basil has opened for such renown acts as The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Miami Sound Machine and, of course, Rodney Dangerfield. A unique part of Basil’s com edy line-up is his impressions and impersonations of unforgettable and unmistakable movie characters from such films as “The Termi nator,” “Risky - Busi ness,” “Super- man,” “Batman,” “Ghost,” “ The Crying Game,” “Pretty Woman” a n d “Forrest Gump.” H i s shows usually include a musical number from the works of Elvis, Bruce Springsteen and Jerry Lewis. As for his credentials, Basil has starred in such films as “Peggy Sue Got Married,” which starred Nicholas Cage and Kathleen Turner. He also co-wrote and associate pro duced Dangerfield’s latest film “Lady Bugs.” In addition, Basil has appeared on “Family Ties” as well as “An Evening At The Improv” and “Comic Strip Live.” He has also performed in Las Ve gas night clubs as well as the college cir cuit. Hxpor and Basil willbeabig part of this weekend’s Homecom ing activi ties as they will keep the audience laughing. The show begins at 9 pim. in McCrary Theatre and tickets are free. Chamber Singers reunite in Homecoming concert Marie Blackett The Pendulum On Saturday, Nov. 14, the Chamber Singers will perform in Whitley Auditorium at 7 p.m.. A niale quartet, whom graduated from Elon in the 1950s, is performing With the Chamber Singers as well. The Chamber Singers is a group of 40 students of various niajors and different backgrounds, who are interested in singing and the arts. Evan Lambert is the direc tor of the group and leads them in performing a wide variety of music. An array of music will be performed by the group, including such songs as, “Promise of Living,” an American piece by Aaron Coplaind, “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day,” a traditional English melody by John Rutter-and “The One Hundredth and Fiftieth Psalm,” a Christian piece by Howard Hanson. Michael D’Angleo, one of the 40 members of the group, is pleased with the work the group has done and is excited about the perfor mance. “Since I am a freshman. I’m really looking forward to it because it will be my first concert with the Chamber Singers,” said D’Angelo. “And the music is wonder ful, how could I not be excited?” This will be the first perfor mance of the year for the Chamber Singers and promises to be a high light to this weekend’s Homecom ing activities. The performance will begin at 7 pm in Whitley Audito rium and admission is free.
