TJ^U)S November 19,1998 Q AOn's Doubek, Olsen reign over Homecoming '98 Lauren Bigge The Pendulum Mike Doubek and Angela Olsen, the 1998-1999 Homecom ing King and Queen, have a few things in common. They have both been dedicated to making the most of their college education, they have both taken on several social respon sibilities during these past few years and they both are personable, out going people. So it’s no surprise that the connection between the King and Queen began way before this past Saturday. Doubek and Olsen have been friends since their freshmen years at Elon, when they both lived on the same floor of Colclough Hall. Since then, life in the Greek community has kept them close, as Olsen is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi so rority and Doubek is AOO’s sweet heart as well as a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. With everything the two se niors are involved in, including their respective Greek organizations, it seems as if they will be well pre pared to handle the duties of Home coming royalty. Olsen is a political science major from Paxton, Mass., whose active involvement in college-re- lated activities and positive attitude toward life will surely aid her as an Elon College representative in her new role as Homecoming Queen. She is currently the senior class president and is finishing her presi dential term in AOO. This past summer she worked as an intern for the North Carolina Coaltion against Sexual Assault and has received certification this fall as a rape crisis volunteer counselor through CrossRoads. Olsen said she feels it is “an amazing honor” to be chosen as Homecoming Queen. The experi- Emily MacDonnell/ The Pendulum ence is something that she will hold close to her heart for a long time, especially because she felt a sense of pressure since several women of AOn have been named Homecom ing Queens for 10 of the 12 years the sorority has existed on campus. She also said Elon is one of the best institutions she’s seen and Homecoming is a time when that is exemplified because the college community comes together. “I think it’s important to real ize Elon is growing and changing and it’s an honor to be a part of it,” Olsen said. She felt that Homecoming this year was somewhat discouraging because not all the campus organi zations seemed to be as involved in the activites. “People lose sight of what it’s about,” she said. “During Home coming we get together to raise money for a cause and this year it was Susan G. Komen Breast Can- ctr Research.” Personally, Olsen enjoyed Homecoming immensely. As a whole, she said she felt the week was both “nerve-wracking” due to all the activities and “awesome” due to the support of her friends and the excitement in the air. To summarize Homecoming game, Olsen simply said “I can’t imagine a more perfect day, except maybe if the weather had been a bit nicer.” Doubek, who was bom in Minnesota but now lives in Danbury, Conn., is a sports medi cine major who seems quite dedi cated to both his future career and his on-campus positions, including the role of Homecoming King. The AXA member has been active in his fraternity and has been a student trainer for three years. “I wouldn’t give up what I do,” he said. 538-0600 Mon-Fri 4pm-2am Sat 4pm-2am Sun 1pm-2am BREWBALLS Across from Food Lion 3730 S. He was a student trainer for football as a sophomore, then became a trainer for men’s basketball during his jun ior year. Now, as a senior, he is the head student trainer for women’s soccer and said he enjoys working with the athletes. Emily MacDonnell/ The Pendulum Doubek is the academic scholarships chairman for AXA, but unlike Olsen did not feel any pres sure about his Homecoming nomi nation because of trends from past years. He said that he looks forward to the Homecoming activities every year and was quite excited to be apart of it all, but did not feel ner vous until the football game on Sat urday when all the candidates were waiting to hear the announcement at halftime. “It’s all fun to me,” he said. “Homecoming is sort of like the fall version of Greek Week because of all the competitions, mostly among the Greek organizations, and I re ally enjoy it.” Doubek said he feels Greek life is a positive aspect of Elon’s social life because the Greek com munity generates a lot of spirit. That feeling is exemplified when he talks about his experiences as the AOO Sweetheart. “The AOn girls have a lot of spirit, and they work really hard in everything they get involved in. Angela herself does so much around here,” he said. As for the the future, both Olsen and Doubek have a pretty clear idea of where they are headed. Olsen will be spending the Winter Term in London and wants to move to Raleigh, N.C., after graduation in May. She then plans to work for a non-profit organiza tion with the idea that she will even tually attend law school. “I know what my goals are, I’m determined and optimistic, so I know it will all work out for me,” she added. Doubek plans to take some classes after graduation at Wake Forest University or Duke Univer sity. He would like to get an intership at a hospital, and, some time in the future, he intends to enter medical school.
