Enjoy I • The Pendulum Editorial Staff Lambert soaks in the Elon life The Pendulum recently sat down with Elon College President, Dr. Leo M. Lambert to discuss the first few weeks of his tenure, which began Jan. L The following is an excerpt from that interview. Pendulum: What have the first few weeks at work been like? Lambert; My first few weeks have been, as you would expect, [about] getting to know people on campus, attending campus events, getting to know faculty and stu dents and trustees and major donors to the campus. I’ve been trying to be seen and be visible. [My family and I] are just trying to soak in as much of the Elon life as we can. And then I’ve been trying to acquaint myself with some of the major issues that I’ll need to be knowledgeable about very quickly. There’s the college budget for next year, many issues regarding the budget need to be decided upon and we have several construction projects that are in the works. And then, of course we’ve been thinking about the stadium campaign... how are we going to bring the Elon Vi sion campaign to a close success fully, including building the foot ball stadium. These are all things that are taking a lot of time and energy. Pendulum: What’s the big gest difference you ’ve seen so far between Elon and Wisconsin? Lambert: Well, I continue to be extremely impressed with the very strong sense of community here at Elon College and the very strong commitment to be a student- centered community. It exists at a level unlike anywhere I’ve ever worked before. I continue to be very impressed by that and I feel like it is my obliga- Dr. Leo M. Lambert Elon College President tion as president to maintain that very strong focus. Pendulum: What are you hoping to get accomplished this semester and into the next year? Lambert: This semester I really want to take the pulse of the campus, just to be visible, to get to know people, to try to understand what the issues are that face Elon College. It is extremely time-con suming just becoming acquainted with people; the college has so many friends and people who are very generous to the college and those are people who are also important for me to know, in addition to the students and faculty. So part of my agenda is to become familiar with all the important people in the Elon College community. And then we’re going to be hiring a new Vice-president of In stitutional Advancement, and it’s very important that we fill that po sition quickly and well. Pendulum: What are you looking forward to most in your tenure as president? Lam bert: It’s hard to pick just one thing. I’m just looking forward to seeing Elon College continue on this very sig nificant up ward path that it’s on right now. So many good things are happening here, the quality of the student body is improving, we’re hiring more faculty, the Physical Plant is grow ing, and I just want to see the future direction of Elon being one of a forward-moving, forward-thinking campus. I see it as my job to make that happen. Pendulum: Is there anything you’d like to say to welcome stu dents back to the Spring semester? Lambert: I’m really anxious to get to know students and I hope students are anxious to get to know me! William Burr, junior: I think it was a major step, but I think the minorities of our country have a long way to go. Especially in business careers where they are not getting the same pay and are still getting cheated out of jobs. Panchita Paulete, fresh man: It was a great start but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Michele Macon, junior: I think remarkable things were done in the sixties but there is still a long way to go. Allyson Brunetti, freshman: The Civil Rights movement was successful for its time but times have changed and it hasn’t kept up. Things could be a little different now. Winston Ford, freshman: I believe that the civil rights move ment was successful, to a point, because now people of different races can work together, interact together, and basically learn to gether. Steve Carkhuff, freshman: Minorities have gained a lot of ground as a result of the civil rights struggle.
