The election held Monday, Feb. 22 and Tuesday, Feb. 23 did not produce a clear majority winner in the race, however it did narrow the field down to John Gardner and Corbie Meadows. “Seeing as no candidate re ceived 50 percent of the vote plus one, we need to have a run-off elec tion for the presidential candidates,” SGA Executive President Mark Richter said. “It would only be for that one day and whoever wins that would become the SGA president.” see ELECTIONS, page 5 Rumors surround flu epidemic Alan Medeiros The Pendulum Many communities are fa mous for their ability to spread ru mors, and the Elon College com munity is no different. One rumor that has been cir culating over the past week is the possibility of classes being cancelled due to the possibility of a flu out break on campus. Associate Dean of Students Jana Lynn Paterson said that all of this speculation is just that. “I have consulted with Dr. Maher’s office and there are no plans to cancel classes: While there are several cases of the flu, there is no epidemic and certainly not numbers to war rant the cancellation of classes.” While Health Services has seen a rise in flu cases this month in comparison to the same time last year, there is no cause for alarm. Director of Health Services Mary Jane Salter said that there are several strains of flu circulating around campus. Many of the students that have come down with the flu are students who did not get a flu vaccination earlier in the year. It should be noted, however, that there is some speculation amongst those in Health Services that one of the strains that is stu dents are coming in with is what is known as the Beijing Flu, and was not included in this years vaccine. Symptoms of this flu include fever, congestion, body aches and in some cases, gastro-intestinai dis tress. The virus also sometimes results in an upper-respiratory in fection. see FLU, page 5
