News— from SMITH, page 1 April 8, 1999 Residents evacuated out the side, front and back doors of the dorm and congregated outside the building. Other CDCs joined Bedard and Johnson outside the building to answer questions about the situa tion, control the crowd and account for residents. “There was smoke pouring out the window,” Kline said. “We couldn’t see any flames but the room was bright orange.” Units from the town of Elon College and Gibsonville fire sta tions responded to the fire by 11:45 p.m., blocking off Haggard Ave. from the McMichael Science Cen ter to the crosswalk at the center of campus. The fire was quickly put out and smoke fans were set up within half and hour to help ventilate the smoke-filled hallway. The couch was removed from the room and brought outside for investigation. Although the investigation into the cause of the fire has not concluded, Bedard speculates that it may have started when a cigarette butt flicked into the room through the window, which does not have a screen, landed on the couch. “One of the guys who lives in the room smokes, however he does not smoke in the room due to his roommate’s allergies,” Bedard said. “All we know right now is that the inside of the couch between the cushions caught on fire,” he said. “The couch was five or ten minutes away from flaming up and getting real bad.” Aside from the couch, no other fire damage to the room was reported. There was also no smoke damage, although there was some water damage to the carpet. There was no other damage to the dorm and residents were al lowed back into the building after firefighters cleared their equipment out of the area. The quick action by the CDCs, Campus Security and the firefighters is credited with keeping the fire from becoming a worse situation. “No one was hurt and every one was out of the building within five minutes,” Johnson said. “It was a difficult situation to handle, but it was handled very well.” “Drew [Bedard] really took charge and made sure the situation was under control,” she said. The Oiganizational Awards and Inaugural Ceremony (OAIC) will be held at 7 p.m. today in McKinnon Hall. Good luck to all nominees! from SCHEDULE, page 1 Mary Wise, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, thinks the new schedule will be beneficial in that it facilitates the process of commit tees accomplishing their goals, which means progress for Elon College. “One of Elon’s strengths is getting faculty and students in volved in decision making, so that everyone has a say in the commu nity,” she said. Wise also said that she thinks the new schedule may encourage student attendance at both College Coffee and Chapel due to the later time slots. The decision to change the class schedule was made last spring, and the new class time periods are listed in the course selection manual for Fall 1999.
