Special Olympics seeking volunteers to aid athletes
Carolyn Lampila
The Pendulum
Volunteers are needed to help
at Special Olympics on Friday, April
30. The event will take place from
8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bakatsias soccer
field.
Chantel Voinier, junior and
Elon Volunteers! Events Coordina
tor, said students are needed to vol
unteer for the whole day to work
with the athletes. She said that
someone has to watch the athletes at
all times.
“The excitement and attitude
of the athletes is really high. They
are really excited and energetic
about Special Olympics. So, we’d
really like to have energetic volun
teers to work with the athletes,”
Voinier said.
Volunteers are also needed to
work in two hour shifts at the regis
tration and food tables, and to run
each event. Voinier estimates that
at least400 volunteers are needed to
make Special Olympics a success.
Voinier said that professors
have been notified of Special Olym
pics and many are willing to allow
their students to have an excused
absence. She urges students to talk
to the professors of classes they
have on Fridays.
Between 100 and 200 ath
letes will participate in a variety of
activities including basketball,
bowling and walking and running
events. There will be a ceremony at
the end of the day to congratulate all
athletes.
“Every athlete is a winner.
Everyone receives a medal at the
end of the day,” Voinier said.
Voinier has worked closely
with Jessica Gill, EV! Events Coor
dinator, to plan Special Olympics.

Sophomores Gretchen Smith and Meredith Kurshaw slide down the
obstacle course at the Jordan Center Marley Fest April 17. Seven bands
played at the fest. For more on Marley Fest see page 25.
Voinier said students Adrien
Stern. Katie Sullivan and Colleen
Magovern have also been a great
help.
Voinier said that interested
students can call EV! at x2102 or
visit the office at Moseley 230.
Voinier gave advice for vol
unteers: “Anyone volunteering
should come with a big smile, a
positive attitude and be ready to
have a fun filled day with athletes.”
The Special Olympics World
Games will be held at different sites
in the Research Triangle area of
North Carolina this summer.
Academic
Mini-Summit
addresses grades
Alan Medeiros
The Pendulum
Faculty and students gathered
together last Sunday for a Mini-
Academic Summit to discuss grad
ing at Elon.
Assistant Dean of Academic
Affairs Mary Wise moderated the
meeting, which brought together
students and faculty from various
subject areas to discuss the system
of grading on campus.
Wise felt that this mini-sum
mit was a “good continuation of the
student-faculty partnership” that
was formed at last year’s Academic
Summit.
