12 April 22, 1999 The Pendulum A-List Tom Arcaro Every year, Elon sociology professor Tom Arcaro takes twenty students on an exotic adventure through the culture of Abrigional Australia. Arcaro’s dedication to the extra-curricular doesn’t stop there. Aside from making his classes some of the most insightful, well-conceived lectures to date, Arcaro reciprocates that time in the hosting of his own campus radio show in which he gives students an opportunity to talk about what’s on their minds. Besides teaching Introductory to Sociology and Sociological Theory, Arcaro is an avid runner and has participated in many marathons. Often sitting at his desk with is feet propped up, one may find him engrossed in a book, or projecting his energy upon his advisees. The powers that be nominated Arcaro this year for Professor of the Year, a prestigious award issued annually by the college. As Arcaro goes about underscoring diversity in all he professes, one aspect of student response was uniform: Arcaro is a dreamer, and as such, he encourages and supports the dreaming of others. Barb Carlton would be it. She has served as a vital link between the student body and the college throughout her years at Elon, first as an area director and now as director of student activities. As Director of Student Activities, Carlton is in constant contact with students on a day-to-day basis. Yet in addition to her duties as director, she has also served as adviser to the Student Union Board and is the current SGA adviser. She has made influential contributions to the Elon community by advising incoming freshmen and commuter students. These varied roles often require her to put in many additional hours that go beyond the regular work day, yet she does so with as much energy and the same warm smile and caring ear as she brings to her daily work schedule. Employed in a department where complaints are measured in scientific notation, his unrivaled fervor and blazing fast interaction skills seem to pacify even the most demanding of customers. The ace up his sleeve? Heart. Above his desk on a plaque hangs his mantra: A brief summation of why it is he does what he does — for the students. Besides overseeing a vast hierarchy of CDCs and directors, Blackman attends every Elon basketball game and makes it a point to play the game during his lunch hour. Although he has no plans to leave, Blackman has already began to leave a legacy. He was influential in the designing of the Danieley Center and has garnered support for the sophomore housing requirement. His textbook knowledge of protocol, Elon ideals and of the most specific housing details qualify him as a visionary to some, and an enigma to others. Whatever the case, his passion and enthusiasm have driven and continue to motivate the office and its members. Simply put, he is an inspiration to all with whom he interacts.
