The Pendulum A-List April 22, 1999 15 s' ^ ' Travis Suber Despite switching from a broadcast communications major to a political science major, freshman Travis Suber has excelled in both fields during his first year at Elon. Travis’ interests encompass both majors, yet he is at just as at home in one as he is in the other. An active participant in campus media, he is the sports anchor for “ElonToday” on ESTV and is a co-host of “The Trent and Travis Show” Tuesdays, midnight-2 a.m. on 89.3 WSOE. Travis served as Delegate Chairperson of Elon’s Chapter of the North Carolina Student Legislature (NCSL) this year. At the first Interim Council earlier this year he won awards for Best Resolution and Best Speaker. At the state level, he was elected to serve as Attorney General for the new legislative session. Fellow members credit him with “bringing NSCL up from nothing” and making it a well- respected and recognized organization on campus and at the state level. He also held the SGA Senate position of Social Sciences representative in this year’s Academic Council and he was recently appointed to be SGA Senate Parliamentarian for 1999-2000. “Travis’ personality leads him to get involved with things in which he can excel,” Trent Gilbert, co-host of The Trent and Travis Show, said. “When he’s involved in something, he’ll give it everything he’s got.” Travis Suber Photo by Emily MacDonnell/T/ie Pendulum Giselle Pole With a friendly, open attitude and her renowned smile to match, Giselle Pole consistently proves that yes, you can do it all at Elon: A senior journalism/ broadcast communications double major, Giselle has been active in her department through her membership in LarribdaPi Eta, the communications honor society, and by working with The Pendulum as both a reporter and as editor of the A&E and Features sections. Her scholarship and leadership extends further, however, as she is also an Honors Fellow and a member of the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program. Outside academics, she is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., with whom she served as chapter president, and the Elon College Gospel Choir. On April 8, she was honored at OAIC with the Best Member of the Year award for both the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program and the Gospel Choir. Giselle serves the Elon College community as a S.M.A.R.T. mentor to freshmen, an Elon College Ambassador and as a student librarian. Through his duties as SGA Education/HPEL representative and Academic Council liaison, Syno has had the opportunity to work toward establishing a better relationship between students and faculty by being the main link between the students and the Academic Affairs office. Syno is also a member of the Dean’s Council, an honor that is not normally bestowed on students. Mark Richter, former SGA Executive President said that “students aren’t typically on (the council), but I think Dr. (Julianne) Maher was impressed with what Matt had to say” with regard to academic issues. Syno has also been instrumental in the on-going Academic Summit. Most recently he was the student coordinator of the academic mini-summit to discuss the meaning of grades at Elon. In addition to his work in academics, Syno, an Athletic Training/Physical Education double major, is also the President of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and has served as an athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team. “He’s always busy,” Dennis Burlew, social sciences representative to the SGA Academic Council and Vice-President of Alpha Chi Rho, said. “He doesn’t ever stop.” Photo by Alan Medeiros/TTie Pendulum
