Hurwitt, a political science/international studies double major, served as President of Model United Nations and as SGA Senate Parliamentarian. He also acted as chairman of the SGA Senate Judicial Committee. He was honored April 8 at OAIC with awards for SGA Senator of the Year and SGA Committee of the Year. “His guidance and expertise were invaluable,” former SGA Executive Treasurer Jeff Angel said. “Without him, I don’t think the SGA could have accomplished half of what we did. Hurwitt put his academics to good use as a member of the curriculum committee, an influential group which discusses the courses and core requirements for Elon students. He was also instrumental in coordinating last year’s Academic Summit through his work with the planning committee for Academic Ethos. He is also a member of the Honors Program. As SGA Executive President, Richter served not as a political figure, but rather as the voice of the Elon College student body itself. “Mark was a good leader,” current SGA Executive President John Gardner said. “He could identify a problem and address it very professionally.” Richter’s influence did not stop with the SGA, however. As the student representative to the Presidential Search Committee, he was instrumental in the selection of Leo Lambert as the new Elon College President. Later in the year, the Board of Trustees named him the Youth Trustee for 1999-2001. Richter, a political science/public administration double major, also works as a tour guide for Admissions and is a contributing columnist for The Pendulum. “Mark is always willing to listen to student concerns,” Gardner said. “If you had a question or problem, he was always willing to stop and talk with you. Angel, a history major, was an instrumental part of the SGA during the 98-99 academic year, going above and beyond the call of duty of his office to improve the SGA time and again. He was instrumental in proposing and eventually passing several amendments to the SGA Constitution. As SGA Executive Treasurer, Angel was responsible for over $400,000 in student activities fees. His duty as treasurer was to distribute the money as fairly as possible. While his primary job was to distribute funds, he also was an active voice in SGA meetings. He was chairman of the elections committee, which is responsible for conducting campus-wide elections in February as well as holding freshman elections in September. In addition to his numerous duties in the SGA office, Angel is also a student worker in the Office of Residence Life as well as a columnist for The Pendulum.
