She did preliminary work for a year before the eight-month investigation began. Jo Craven, a 1985 Elon Col lege graduate and former editor in chief of The Pendulum, was awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize Gold Award for public service April 12 for an investigative series that appeared in the Washington Post. “It was surprising,” Craven said about winning what is consid ered journalism’s top honor. “People in the office started to talk SGA appoints nine senators to vacant seats Carrie Lancos The Pendulum The Student Government Association (SGA) ap pointed nine candidates to vacant positions in the Senate At-Large and Academic Councils at the April 22 meet ing. In the senior class, Corbie Meadows was ap pointed to vice-president, Nilija Koram was appointed to Secretary/Treasurer and Jude Dooley, Christy Waterman and Kim Wright were appointed as senators. Two people ran for the vice-president seat, two people ran for the secretary/treasurer seat and four people ran for the senatorial positions. Meadows said that some goals she wishes to ac complish in her new office are: “Selecting a good gradu ation speaker and raising money for our class so we can give a really good class gift.” Dooley’s plan is to increase SGA’s presence on campus. “The big thing I want to accomplish is more communication amongst the senior class,” he said. Craven researched the D.C. police shootings by combing through FBI databases for records of justifiable homicides. The style of journalism she used, computer assisted reporting, revealed that the FBI collects records of justifiable homicides, but does not publish them. The five-part series, which appeared in the Post in November, revealed a pattern of reckless shootings by D.C. police due to inadequate training and reported that D.C. police killed more people per resident in the 1990s than any other big-city police force. Since the series was pub lished, D.C. Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey has doubled the number of hours officers must spend train ing to re-qualify for their handguns. “The reaction [to the series] was largely very positive from the police, the FBI, the Justice Depart ment and the community,” Craven said. see CRAVEN, page 7 see SGA, page 7 Kelly Wingate and Jay Bryan seek out a shady spot at Elon Pest, which was held Saturday, April 24.
