News September 23, 1999 5 from CANNON, page 1 “Dr. Cannon’s generous gift will make it possible for us to pre pare our students to thrive in a global environment.” Cannon credits President Lambert with the idea of the en dowment, “Dr. Lambert is the one who had the vision to establish (the endowment for the International Program).” “Our world is more inti mately involved in our lives that what it was 20 or 30 years ago,” Cannon said. “There is a real impetus for us to know about people in other lands and for them to know us. This exciting center will make that possible. I am thrilled and excited about this center, which can do so much in allowing Elon students to experience other lands and people.” While the endowment will serve to help fund the international programs for years to come, it will also help students currently in need. “There will be scholarships for students who can’t afford to come to help them come (on study abroad experiences).” Cannon has already made a lasting contribution to the college, as her endowment to the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program con tinues to teach students how to be responsible leaders on both a local and global scale well into the 2P‘ century. “Dr. Cannon has committed her life to civic responsibility and that if students can understand not just to act locally, as important as that is, but also to act globally. She endowed the Isabella Cannon Lead ership Program here on campus so that people will understand how to act locally and how to act globally,” said Assistant Dean of Students John Barnhill. “I think that Dr. Cannon is somebody that has inspired our stu dents that are a part of that pro gram. She comes every fall and she talks to the new Emerging Leaders and says that this is something that is very important to the college, leadership as a whole.” from SERVICE DAY, page 1 ..Ai's noi like any worship serpke you'pe ever hem io,,,, Bmtf Sunday Set yon in Whiilejf fhi$ Sunday! ^^QonttmpmAty worship ♦Casual Dr«ss/Sertotts is spoken litre •For mor«m£o, call Marie Fox at 581-9990 or X-2755(bxm«ii#elm.el«) Intern in the Office of Admissions during Winter Term 2000 Excellent opportunity to develop skills in public relations, communications and organization Positions available: 4 travel interns • Travel to major cities with admissions staff • Make presentations to prospective students and families • Leam recruiting process Resume deadline: September 30,1999 Start date: January 3,2000 Send resume to: Charmin Burgess Associate Director of Admissions 2700 Campus Box Several residence halls vol unteered at the Elon College fire station, while fraternities and so rorities participated in highway clean-ups and fundraisers for their respective philanthropies. Students also volunteered at the Carousel Festival in the Burlington City Park. The concert, co-sponsored by the Student Union Board and SGA, brought students back to campus to enjoy music, food and a beverage garden. “I was pleased with the event,” John Gardner said. “Every one was dancing, screaming and having fun, but it was all kept under control” Security was on hand to con trol the crowds around the stage and to monitor entrance to the beverage garden, however no problems were reported. “Personally, I loved the con cert,” John Gardner said. “When Montgomery Bums Band started and I looked behind me and saw hundreds of people, I knew this was big. It was a perfect day.” Current plans are to keep Elon Service Day as a yearly event with campus-wide participation, much like that of National Make-A-Dif- ference Day on Oct. 23. “Next year I’d like to host the same event, but on a larger scale,” John Gardner said. “I want to reach out to more members of the com munity as well as more students.” Make your voice heard.
