6 October 28, 1999 News from DANIELE Y, page 1 Poe said the new tram service should be in effect as early as Nov. 1 or as soon as a new security guard can be hired. Danieley Center will also be getting 78 new parking spaces in between D, E and F buildings. In order to clear the area for the new spaces, several trees will be removed this week. Neil Bromilow, Director of Construction, said it will then take approximately two weeks for an outside contractor to prepare the area for asphalt. The parking spaces are ex pected to be completed by January. “The parking situation was getting absurd,” said Danieley Cen ter CDC Drew Bedard. “Students were scared to walk from the sci ence lot to Danieley late at night and were asking for additional park ing.” During the construction, 10 to 15 spaces will be temporarily lost to provide access to the construc tion crew. Parking spaces will also be temporarily blocked while the new parking lot is being connected to the old one. David Blackman, Director of Residence Life, feels that gaining new parking spaces has a twofold purpose. “It shows that SGA is really working this year,” he said. “They ’ re hearing student concerns and tak ing action on them. “This year’s SGA has great student leaders who are passionate about what they do. It also means Danieley is getting more parking spaces.” “The concern was not that there was enough parking for the students who live in Danieley, but for their families and friends who visit,” Blackman said. “It creates an environment where people can come and enjoy the Commons building and visit friends without having to worry about parking.” “Getting new parking is a great thing for the area. It was some thing that the students were asking for and they got it,” said Bedard. “It also shows that the admin istration is really working for the students.” from MENINGITIS, page 1 These symptoms can occur in several hours or they may take one to two days. Students who experience these symptoms should seek medi cal attention immediately. Meningococcal meningitis is contagious. The bacteria are spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. The Centers for Disease Con trol and Prevention does note that none of the bacteria that cause men ingitis are as contagious as things like the common cold or the flu, and they are not spread by casual con tact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been. Department of Public Health is not making a recommendation to ob tain the vaccine at this time, the American College Health Associa tion as well as the Centers for Dis ease Control are recommending that students and their families discuss the disease and the vaccination. While the risk of contracting meningococcal meningitis is one in 100,000 for average 18 year-olds, the risk becomes 3.8 in 100,000 for freshmen in college dormitories, according to the Centers for Dis ease Control. Several meningitis cases were reported at Wake Forest University as well as at other colleges around the nation. The American College Health Association reports that between 100 to 125 college students contract this type of meningitis each year and between five and ten of the cases result in death. In addition to the vaccine, the American College Health Associa tion also promotes good health hab its, such as not sharing glasses, cov ering mouths when coughing, and thoroughly washing hands and uten sils to reduce the likelihood of con tracting meningitis or any other communicable disease.
