Expansion fraternity
to join Elon Greeks

Elon College’s Greek com
munity will gain another set of let
ters when a new fraternity is wel
comed on campus in March.
The Interfraternity Council
(IFC), the governing body forBlon’s
male social Greek organizations,
called for the addition of a new
fraternity in September.
The request was response to
the loss of one fraternity in March
1998 and the subsequent strain put
on the remaining six fraternities in
terms of the amount of new mem
bers they could accept.
In October, the Office of
Greek Life notified the 60 national
fraternities not already represented
on campus of the college’s interest
in adding another fraternity.
18 nationally recognized fra
ternities responded and are vying
for the spot as Elon’s newest Greek
organization. Among them are Al
pha Phi Delta, Alpha Sigma Phi,
Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Phi, Delta
Chi, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Tau
Delta, Phi Gamma Delta, Delta
Upsilon, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa
Alpha, Pi Lambda Phi, Sigma Nu
and Theta Chi.
Three fraternities that were
previously on campus, Pi Kappa
Pendulum
Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Tau
Kappa Epsilon also expressed in
terest in expansion. Alpha Chi Rho,
a fraternity that is active at Elon but
not recognized by the college, also
applied.
“I am extremely pleased with
the 18 applications we received,”
Director of Greek Life Grahaeme
Hesp said. “The fact that we’ve
generated interest from large na
tional groups shows the strength
and positive feeling that exists to
wards the Greek system at Elon.”
The evaluation and selection
process, overseen by a 14-member
expansion committee, began Oct.
26.
The committee includes
Greek and non-affiliated students,
faculty and staff.
They are currently reviewing
the information supplied by the in
terested organizations and will nar
row the selection down to three
candidates by Nov. 30.
The three organizations se
lected will be invited to send na
tional representatives to Elon in
January.
They will give presentations
to the expansion com.mittee and to
the Greek organizations and gov
erning bodies.

Elon tops in USA Today college report

The Pendulum
Elon College was listed in a
USA Today article Nov. 8 as being
one of the lesser-known colleges
that stand out as an excellent school,
even though it does not have admis
sion standards as high as some of
the traditional brand name schools.
Loren Pope, an author and
college placement expert, was
quoted in the article as saying that
many lesser-known schools are
“non-traditional places” that offer
cutting edge education and teach
students to think and cope in a new
kind of world. Learning is coopera
tive, not competitive, as it tends to
be in the Ivy League schools.
Also, students are engaged in
their own learning, as opposed to
lecture halls and taking notes from
a professor or graduate assistant.
Sophomore Caroline Lalla
came to Elon mainly because of the
small size.
“I liked the attention to stu
dents that is offered in the small
classes and the new facilities and
the beauty of the campus helped me
to reach my decision,” she said.
Freshman Sean Branson came
to Elon after reading about it during
his senior year of high school.
“Elon sent me mail and flyers
recruiting me. I came here to visit
the campus and meet with the ad
missions staff
“I wasn’t sure about Elqn be
fore I came, but the visit sold me.
The campus itself, and the fact that
the people here were very nice and
went out of their way to make me
feel at home sold it for me.”
