While there have been three
assaults on campus in the past two
weeks, there is no reason to panic,
according to administration offi
cials.
On Nov. 10, a little after 6
p.m., a female student was attacked
from behind as she crossed the in
tramural fields toward the Danieley
Center Commons. She was able to
get away and went immediately to
her room where she reported the
incident. The student was not
harmed during the attack.
While this incident seemed to
be a random attack and has caused
concern among students, there have
been other recent assaults also re
ported to campus police.
On Nov. 7, a female student
was the victim of an assault near
Staley Hall. The victim was able to
get away from the assailant and was
not injured in the incident.
This incident is not the first
incident that has happened to this
student on campus this year, and
campus security officials feel that
the two attacks on this person are by
the same individual, and that the
individual does not appear to be a
threat to any other student at the
present time.
Campus Police and Security
officials declined further comment,
as the investigation is pending.
In the early morning hours of
Nov. 14, a male was assaulted at the
Danieley Center Apartments dur
ing a group altercation.
According to Director of
Campus Security Allen Poe, the
incident remains under investiga
tion and no arrests have been made.
Assistant Dean of Students
John Barnhill said that while each
incident is a concern to the college,
they are in no way related and should
not serve to cause a panic amongst
the student body. “These recent in
cidents are not an epidemic,” he
said.
With the addition of two new
security officers, and one more of
ficer to be added to the staff, Cam
pus Security is increasing security
patrols between Moseley Center and
Danieley Center partly in response
to the Nov. 10 incident.
According to Vice-President
of Student Life and Dean of Stu
dents Smith Jackson, the college
has been in the process of adding
security at night for some time.
The new security personnel
will drive a Cushman vehicle with
an eight person capacity. It will not
only be used for patrol, but will also
operate along the intramural path at
night.
