2 February 17, 2000 Opinions 'Viewjyoint Lately there’s been a lot of talk about Elon becoming a University, The sanae rumor tends to resurface Hke bad tequila, but this time the allegations may have more truth that you think. Last Fall a committee headed by the Provost examined issues relating to the academic organization of Elon, Their conclusions included the nev^^ Schools of Journalism, Education as w'ell as the College of Arts and Sciences* ‘Tes, w^hile there has been talk over the last couple of years about Elon becoming a University, it’s not happening anytime soon,"’ said President Lambert the day of the reorganization. Is this the truth? And how long exactly is “soon”? . What do you know about the college’s expansion plans? There’s a fundamental problem facing Elon right now, as the economy is in full force and a new president has assumed the position. There are those of you who fell in love with Elon because of its charm: it’s small, affordable and provides you with individualized attention. You have to admit it’s nice not being just a number. At the same time, there are also a number of alumni as well as prospective students who want to see Elon become a lot bigger. Why? Well, if you haven’t faced that cruel reality yet, you’ll come to understand frustration when an interviewer asks, ''Elon - what’s that? What’s that stand for? Is that like ECPI?’* For $70,000, it damn well better not beECPI, Also, those prospective students get bumped every year from the long waiting list that could only be shortened by admitting more students. The college is missing out on money it could be making. To build or not to build? Continue with wonderful programs and the charm and attention,, or build a stronger national image? Check out www,elon,edu/fadlities and www*elon.edii/ priorities. You'll be surprised to learn of the bypass, technology and convocation centers, annexing of all of West campus and so forth. Elon U. really doesn’t look that far behind. I applaud yoiir decision to dedicate every square foot within city limits to the noble purpose of restauranteering. Only months ago, meal time meant going out to whine and dine, with emphasis on the former. And the griping was justified - just ask the countless diners who had to wait fifteen minutes before they were seated! In that time, a beam of light could have traveled from our Sun to the Earth... and nearly back again! Scandalous! The arrival of O’Charley’s, Ruby Tuesday and evan another Japanese steakhouse will help alleviate dining delays, but our plans must be carried out in their en tirety. Shame on those of you who have grumbled about Burlington’s beneficent de signs! Let he who is without hunger cast the first mozzarella stick! Do you rabble-rousers re alize how many Olive Gardens and T.G.I. Fridays we will be able to construct where the hos pital once stood? Who will seek a plaster should be lined with bags of cast for his broken bone when presented with the delectable al- ternative of a calcium-rich Chili’s milkshake? No one, I say! And worry not for those impish scamps at Elon Homes for Children. When their bedrooms are bulldozed to make room for another Rich Blomquist The Pendulum richard.blomquist@eloaedy Golden Corral, they will not go destitute. The orphans will be put right to work, icing the salad bar and busing tables with all the moxie we’ve come to love them for. And allow me to address the problem of roads. If we cannot do away with them to make room for restau rants as we had hoped, let us follow the example of those vi sionaries at the Drive-Thru Bev erage Center. Burlington’s streets potato chips and cases of Mello Yello, so that our motorist need only roll down his window to receive sustenance! Newcomers to our com munity may not fully understand the seri ousness of our restau rant- building fervor. Take heed, Holly wood Video! Your kind is n o t wanted in Buriinglon! No amount of zesty Thou sand Island dressing will render your bland, plastic videotapes edible. I suggest that you find a way to incorporate licorice into your video cassette technology, or suffer the same fate as the other non-restaurants in Burlington ;..the steely justice of the wrecking ball! All you can eat! P.J. Procaccini devours a hot wing at the First Annual Lambda Chi Alpha WingBowl Saturday, Feb. 12. Procaccini, along with Drew Bedard, Greg Boger, Kevin Conant, John Little, Anthony Losordo and Scott Slepokura, made up the winning team of wing-eaters, consuming a total of over 150 wings in one sitting. photo by Carrie tancos
