Pf ^fil© March 2,2000 Q Pushing for new ideas in Web content and design Jeff Sanders The Pendulum "Websites are at a point where design is absolutely im perative,” said Richard Puchyr. “Elon is swimming in natural beauty. I’d love to add some of that to the website.” Director of College Rela tions Dan Anderson hired Puchyr (pronounced pusher) Feb. 14 as the Director of Web Content and Design for the col lege. The new position partly replaces the Director of World Wide Web Services held by former staff member Eric Cone. Puchyr is no stranger to Elon's Office of College Rela tions. For the past two years, he has contributed his photojournalistic acuity to sev eral of the publications pro duced there. After spending time freelancing, he decided to settle in at Elon. “It’s a very friendly place to be,” he said. “There’s noth ing thus far that I dislike.” Puchyr hopes to further his lay out and design skills in working with the Web Layout and de sign is an incredible opportu nity, it’s very futuristic,, and experimental. There’s a lot of fun in that,” he said. “There is a lot of talent upstairs in the staff in College Relations. I’d like to tap into that as well.” He added that he intends to treat the position in design as a daily newspaper. To relieve some of the stress that comes with his job, Puchyr likes to spend time hiking, cooking, backpacking and taking pic tures. "Yeah, you’d think that be cause it’s my job that I get sick of it. I went through that for a while, but now it’s become one of my favorite hobbies,” he said. Puchyr also serves as the adviser for Elon Outdoors, the outdoor recreation program sponsored by Campus Recre ation. As for Cone’s award-win- ning work, Puchyr stated, "I’m really amazed by what he did. He had the vision to foresee the problems that would occur, like updating, and created original solutions to deal with them. How he dynamically created many of the pages was really smart.” Cone resigned in mid-Oc tober of 1999 to pursue other career opportunities. For the past four months, computer re pair technician Michael Allred has served as an interim webmaster, and will continue toserve as a web server administrator until a per manent replacement may be found. Cone’s extensive, work at Elon in systems implementa tion and design as well as World Wide Web site design recently garnered the Office of College Relations a CASE District III Award. A special merit award was given for E-net! the college’s online news and information website. The search to replace Puchyr as a part-time photog rapher is currently underway as well.“Hopefully my vision with the website will be in its design,” he said.
