Campus Bookstore sets the record straight on high prices Megan Dicasali The Pendulum Got books? Even if they are used as coasters, chances are you got them at the Campus Bookstore. While some do make use of them, everyone is always bowled over with the price of books each semester. Many of us are forced to fork over at least $300; most of which we will never see again, even with buy backs. Where does all this money go? Joleene Alley, manager of the Campus Bookstore, set the record straight. Barnes and Noble owns the bookstore. As the owners, they take about 67percent of profits for themselves and the publish ers. Another 12percent com bined goes to the author and freight company. So that leaves about 21 percent of your money into the school. Take out the 1 Opercent that pays employees and taxes and we’re left with a whoi 1 Ipercent that actually goes into the school. Elon could make books cheaper by giving up their 1 Iper cent of the profits, but that money helps to keep key programs run ning. The bookstore gives out ten semester scholarships to students who are in need. That’s at least $6,000 in new books given away each year. Two lucky students will also get the chance to win free books for spring semester at basketball game, in November and Decem ber. The bookstore also supports campus organizations. Many school associations such as Resi dence Life, the Baptist Student Union and the athletics teams re ceive donations for give-aways during games and events or money to support their group. So next time you visit Var sity Books online for cheaper books or complain about prices, remember that the Bookstore is the only place that gives back to the community. tt n C # \ \ a % 0 € e m: m a n 11 y n t ? m i i'i ^ t • I .?
