News Editor In spite of the unseasonable 10 inches of rain Elon had Septem ber officials say Rhodes Stadium will hold true to promise and open in September of 2001. The new stadium on Elon College’s campus broke ground last spring and is named in honor of Peggy and Warren (Dusty) Rhodes of Gibsonville, N.C. “The project is currently about 8 to 10 days off schedule, but that should not have an effect on the stadium being ready for the 2001 football season,” said Dr. Alan White, Director of Athletics. Major sections of Rhodes Stadium are under construction. “It’s a work in progress,” White said. “Nothing is complete as of yet, construction crews have be gun work on the concessions and restrooms on the visitors’ side of the stadium.” The majority of the work so far has been to compete the interior brick wall encircling the stadium, the bowl-shaped field and steel framework for seating 8,250 fans that has been put into place. “There will be 6,500 seats on the home side of the field,’-’ White said. “Leaving another 1,750 seats for the opposing team.” In addition to the new sta dium, the project includes a bell tower, archway and concourse. The expansion of the existing Koury Field House will provide home and visitors’ locker rooms, and weight and training rooms. Addition construction will take place for roads leading to the stadium and parking lots. “With renovations to both the soccer and baseball fields, the stadium will make the entire complex complete,” White said. The construction on the north end of campus is exciting not only for the team, but also for the college as a whole. Hopes are that the new facility will bring together students, parents, alumni and faculty to enjoy the games and camaraderie. For the past 50 years, the Elon College football team has played at Burlington Memorial Stadium, which is several miles off campus, located near Williams High School. “We appreciate the use of Burlington Memorial,” White said. “However, there is nothing like drawing people on campus and having the atmosphere right here.” The Fifth Annual Elon College Elite and Recreational Racquetball Tournament October 13-15 Entry Fee $15 for all students, faculty and staff.
