Her address in Alumni Gym reached out to Elon students and faculty to place education as the highest pri ority. To approximately 2,800 lis teners, she stressed the importance of intercultural education and cross- cultural interaction. “The exchange of informa tion between various countries, cul tures, races and peoples is neces sary to promote cross-cultural in teraction and understanding and promote tolerance and solidarity among our multi-faceted global community,” Queen Noor said. Queen Noor was bom Lisa Najeeb Halaby in 1951 to a distin guished Arab-American family. Her emphasis on multi-cultural learning stems from both her family background and her marriage to King Hussein. “My own multi-cul tural background and life-joumey have strengthen my belief in the importance of international ex change and multi-cultural perspec tives in the building of equitable, productive and peaceful relations among individuals and communi ties,” Queen Noor said. Queen Noor graduated from Princeton in 1974. During the ad dress, she spoke of her college years, a time when she was actively con cerned with issues such as social injustice, poverty and the environ ment. She placed a heavy emphasis on a college education, stating that her college education acted as a catalyst, which caused her to act on what she had learned. “Colleges can foster an un derstanding of international issues, such as the environment, human rights and global populations, while teaching students to resolve con flict without violence,” Queen Noor said. Students who attended the speech had a positive reaction to Queen Noor. At a campus-wide picnic following, the celebration, praise of the Queen and her speech circulated fast. “I thought she was breath taking,” sophomore Lisa Purtz said. “Her words touched on what I feel Elon stands for - a quality educa tion.” During the convocation.
