Last week’s festivities, planned by the Student Government Association, was a blend of new and traditional events that were cen tered on this year’s theme, “Light the Flame.” SGA Homecoming Chairman Katie Gosselin said she was very pleased with the outstanding turnout of students and their over whelming participation. “We had 25 organizations and over 1,500 students participate this year,” Gosselin said. “It was a very successful Homecoming week.” Gosselin explained some changes that were made this year, such as a review of the points system, easier access to rules through SGA’s Homecoming Web site and encourag ing more organizations to participate. “A strong emphasis was placed on in cluding all organizations, not just Greeks,” Gosselin said. “It was a more diverse gathering of the student body and I think that encouraged more people to come to events.” This year’s overall winners were first place, Pi Kappa Phi; second place. Alpha Omicron Pi and third place, Zeta Tau Alpha, The week began with the banner and costume contest, held during College Coffee on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The costume contest was held in the spirit of Halloween and organiza tions were judged in the three categories of Elon beats Liberty page 24 most creative, funniest and scariest costumes. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity dressed as Se cret Servicemen to take the prize of scariest costume and Alpha Omicron Pi won most creative by dressing as Monopoly pieces. Pi Kappa Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha and Phi Mu tied in the category of funniest costumes. “Organizations seemed to have fun with this event,” Gosselin said. “They really had a good time and showed a lot of creativity.” Homecoming King and Queen voting received the highest voter turnout ever with 730 students participating. Gosselin said she believed that posters with nominees’ pictures and biographies along with the Phoenix Card system increased the number of students sup porting the voting process. Alpha Omicron Pi representative Lisa Fort was crowned Homecoming Queen and Pi Kappa Phi representative Chad Heinicke is Homecoming King, The pep rally, bonfire and fireworks on Thursday evening were a highlight to the school spirit during Homecoming Week. “The football team and women’s soccer team were two of the fall sports most strongly represented,” Gosselin said. “Everyone on campus was welcome to participate and it turned out to be an example of the excitement of the week.” Over $720 was raised by the participat ing organizations for this year’s Homecoming philanthropy.
