Homecoming Week 2000 has come to a
close, leaving the Elon College campus with a
strong sense of school spirit and energy.
Last week’s festivities, planned by the
Student Government Association, was a blend
of new and traditional events that were cen
tered on this year’s theme, “Light the Flame.”
SGA Homecoming Chairman Katie
Gosselin said she was very pleased with the
outstanding turnout of students and their over
whelming participation.
“We had 25 organizations and over 1,500
students participate this year,” Gosselin said.
“It was a very successful Homecoming week.”
Gosselin explained some changes that
were made this year, such as a review of the
points system, easier access to rules through
SGA’s Homecoming Web site and encourag
ing more organizations to participate.
“A strong emphasis was placed on in
cluding all organizations, not just Greeks,”
Gosselin said. “It was a more diverse gathering
of the student body and I think that encouraged
more people to come to events.”
This year’s overall winners were first
place, Pi Kappa Phi; second place. Alpha
Omicron Pi and third place, Zeta Tau Alpha,
The week began with the banner and
costume contest, held during College Coffee
on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The costume contest was
held in the spirit of Halloween and organiza

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity dressed as Se
cret Servicemen to take the prize of scariest
costume and Alpha Omicron Pi won most
creative by dressing as Monopoly pieces. Pi
Kappa Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha and Phi Mu tied in
the category of funniest costumes.
“Organizations seemed to have fun with
this event,” Gosselin said. “They really had a
good time and showed a lot of creativity.”
Homecoming King and Queen voting
received the highest voter turnout ever with
730 students participating. Gosselin said she
believed that posters with nominees’ pictures
and biographies along with the Phoenix Card
system increased the number of students sup
porting the voting process.

The pep rally, bonfire and fireworks on
Thursday evening were a highlight to the school
spirit during Homecoming Week.
“The football team and women’s soccer
team were two of the fall sports most strongly
represented,” Gosselin said. “Everyone on
campus was welcome to participate and it
turned out to be an example of the excitement
of the week.”
Over $720 was raised by the participat
ing organizations for this year’s Homecoming
philanthropy. Camp Celebrate.
