Adam Waterson / Photography Editor Lighthouse closing: rumor Susan Duppstadt The Pendulum The Lighthouse is one of Elon’s favorite hangout spots for students, especially on Thursday nights. Lately, the word on the street has been that Elon is plan ning to buy the Lighthouse and tear it down to make additional parking spaces. Well, have no fear because there is absolutely no truth to this ridiculous rumor. The rumor started several weeks ago when alumni of the col lege phoned the Office of College Relations and the Office of Aiumni Relations asking whether or not the rumor was true. There were many stories circulating about what was going to happen to the Lighthouse. Some heard the Lighthouse was going to close, while others heard Elon College was planning to buy it and tear it down to make room for parking. Chris Hines, owner of the Lighthouse, said: “There is no truth to it whatsoever. The Lighthouse has not been sold, has not been bought, has not been tom down, we are still open.” No one has any idea how the rumor originated. However, late in the fall, business had apparently slowed down a bit. This is the only possible known contributing factor to such a disturbing rumor. Many offices on campus have received phone calls from various individuals, mostly alumni, want ing to know whether the rumor is true. Hines has reportedly received numerous calls from alumni all over the United States, including Chi- cagp, New York, and California. According to Gerald Whittington, Vice President for business, finance and technology, Elon developed the Facilities Mas ter Plan a few years ago. The programwill assist the downtown area of the T own of Elon in remain ing a commercial area. Elon would like to work with the town and various individuals around the area to build more businesses that would be more appealing to the students and members of the surrounding community. Some possible en deavors might include a music store, a new bank, a dry cleaner, a photo copy store, more diverse restau rants and a drug store. As always, Elon is willing to work with the town to improve the look of the area. Some prospective items include better lighting, green see Lighthouse, page 5
