A grant provided by the Can
non Foundation, Inc. will help fund
one of the newest editions to Elon
College’s campus. The $50,000
will help fund the $850,000 con
struction costs of the new health
and counseling center.
In 1943, the late Charles A.
Cannon founded the Cannon Foun
dation, Inc. The company’s head
quarters are located near Charlotte
in Concord, NC.
Cannon was president and
chairman of the Cannon Mills Com
pany for more than 50 years. The
foundation administers and receives
funds for different purposes, in
cluding religious, charitable, sci
entific, literary and educational pur
poses.
“This generous gift from the
Cannon Foundation will benefit ev
ery member of the Elon Commu
nity,” Elon President Leo Lambert
said. “We are grateful to the Can
non Foundation for this gift and its
commitment to higher education
and the health needs of our stu
dents.”
The new. facility is to be
named in honor of Dr. Robert N.
Ellington of Burlington, NC. He
has served as the college’s physi
cian for 15 years.
When asked about his feel
ings toward the center being named
after him, Dr. Ellington said, “[It
is] very humbling and embarrass
ing, normally they name buildings
after the deceased. I figure I’ll
have to cut my life span short 10 or
15 years. 'v
“On a more serious note,
Ellington said, “I appreciate [the
honor] very much, and what’s more
important is that we have a new
building.”

Out with the old and In with the new: With help from the Cannon
Foundation, Elon will soon see a new health center on campus.
Construction has begun behind Moseley Center.
The new Ellington Center, dated and more spacious environ-
which is already under construc
tion, will be located on the north
side of campus, behind the Moseley
Center. The center will provide
Elon with a wider range of medical
and counseling services in an up-
ment.
The new health center will
be equipped with five medical ex
amination rooms, an observation
room, rooms for triage, laboratory
equipment, medications and shot
administration.
The center will also house
Elon’s counseling services, cur
rently located on the comer of
Trollinger Street and Antioch Av
enue.
In order to accommodate
Counseling Services, five new coun
seling rooms and a group confer
ence room will be constructed. A
spacious waiting room to accom
modate patients for both services
and more office space are also in
cluded in the construction plan.
Kitty Parrish, a licensed fam
ily nurse practitioner, said, “The
new building will offer more confi
dentiality.” Some students on cam
pus have said the lack of privacy is
a flaw in the current health services
