What IS your most prized possession? My family and friends. Who is one person you would like to meet? George W. Bush Do you have any good luck rituals and if so what are they? No, I am not a superstitious person. 1 love to live life straight up. Elon Poll finds education continues to be a top concern of residents Karen Lungarelli Reporter The fourth Elon poll, con ducted by the Elon Institute for Politics and Public Affairs, showed education is one of the greatest con cerns among North Carolinians. Ninety-two percent of the residents polled said they would like policymakers to make educa tion reform a top priority. Sixty four percent also favored a state lottery, up from 61 percent in De cember. Of the 64 percent, half feel the profits should be used for education in the state. Dr. Sharon Spray, director of the poll and an assistant professor of political science, said: “Citizens are very supportive of the lottery, but legislators aren’t. Our polls show that support is continuing to grow.” While the state has a budget deficit expected to reach $791 mil lion, 63 percent of those polled believe the economy is doing well. Twenty-seven percent believe eco nomic conditions will improve, 31 percent feel they will worsen, and 37 percent think the economy will stay the same. Fifty-nine percent of those polled be lieve the Bush ad ministration is moving the coun try in a positive di rection. The poll showed North Carolinians are optimistic about their future and the future of the state, as well as the fu ture of America. Political sci ence professors used student input to help design the telephone poll; it was conducted Feb. 12-14 in the Powell computer lab. It was the fourth in a series of polls that began in September.
