SGA tables Residence Life funding

The Student Government As
sociation met for the first time
last Thursday. With a full agenda,
the senate started-off the year
with a proposal to give nearly
half of the existing carry over ac
count to Residence Life, a deci
sion that would effect 2,022 stu
dents living in tradition style
dorms on campus.
The decision in the hands of
the senate and executive mem
bers would be to give additional
funding to aid the new self-gov
erning student leadership model.
Already, Residence Life has
set aside $12 per resident. Ini
tially, Residence Life asked SGA
for $20 per resident. After re
viewing the budget, Christian
Wiggins, executive treasurer
made a proposal offering to give
$4 per resident, which would
amount to being $8,088.
“Considering we only have an
average figure of $17,767.87 in
the carry over account, I feel
comfortable in giving $4 per resi
dent,” Wiggins said. “That would
give a substantial start to a bud
get and if more is needed, we can
reevaluate the situation.”
Students within the Senate
spent an hour debating the issue,-

As long as there are willing people to work and
implement area programs that help bring the campus
together in a safe way, it is our responsibility as an SGA
to give them the means to accomplish their goals.
many split on a decision.
“This bill is SGA’s first oppor
tunity to encourage, foster and
fund non-alcoholic programs and
events with the goal of bringing
communities and different groups
of people together,” said Junior
Brian Feeley. “As long as there
are willing people to work and
implement area programs that
help bring the campus together in
a safe way, it is our responsibil
ity as an SGA to give them the
means to accomplish their goals.”
Trevor Kincaid, newly elected
Freshman Class President had an
opposing view.
“I don’t think the program has
had enough time to get a good
foundation,” he said. “No one
really know too much about the
program and I don’t think it is
wise to make a blind decision es
pecially when dealing with
$8,000.”
A motion was made to table the
topic until tonight when the SGA
will reconvene and reopen the
proposal for discussion.
Shana Plasters, Assistant Di
rector of Residence Life and Ser
vice Learning addressed the body
and explained the changes made
in the Residence Life Program
this year.
The self governing student
leadership model was designed
last semester. The system encour
ages residents to take ownership
and leadership in their individual
communities, Plasters said.
Each hall has floor councils,
whose members then make up
five different area councils. Floor
council members are students
who are not paid, but elected by
their hall to govern the affairs of
the floor and coordinate area-
wide programs and serve as ad
vocates for residents.
Each residence hall has two
student staff members that serve
as facilitators and advisors of the
floor councils and then each area
of campus has a professional live-
on staff member that acts to sup
port the student staff as well as
the councils.

Last week four bells from France were installed in the bell
tower at Rhodes Stadium. Three workers in the tower used
winches to guide the bells into position. The largest bell, in
scribed with “ Elon University, Founded 1889” weighs 998
pounds. The three other bells have the inscription “The Phoe
nix, ” “Christian Church”and “Numen Lumen. ” The bell tower
