Page 16 Stadium Special Sept. 22, 2001 New stadium unveiled in full glory Jessica Vitak Chief Copy Editor Elon University’s Rhodes Sta dium has been a long awaited addi tion to the campus. The football team hajl to wait 92 years before getting a home field, but most will agree that this stadium was well worth the wait. Boasting 8,250 seats, including 1,800just for Elon students, the sta dium was designed by Elberte Becket, a leader in the architecture, engineering and construction indus tries. The firm has designed a large number of sports arenas, including Atlanta’s 1996 Centennial Olympic Stadium and the Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. The firm has also reno vated parts of Norte Dame Stadium and Madison Square Garden. The stadium is named for Peggy and Dusty Rhodes, residents of Gibsonville, N.C. The two have made countless gifts to better. Their gift toward the stadium emphasizes their devotion to the school. McKinnon Field is named for Elon alum Bob McKinnon ‘62 and his wife Ray, The field is identical to many NFL fields. The arches at the entrance to Rhodes Stadium are named in honor of Elon alum Nick Theos, who has dedicated his life to education. Furman Moseley made the decision to name the arch after his lifetime friend. Below are just a few pictures that capture the beauty and maj esty of Elon’s own football sta dium.
