Mechanics My brother lives by the stains On his slacks, the oil pumping Through his veins fueling The delicate instruments That are his hands, Fingers crafting the process Of acceleration, the process Of spark to ignition, driving Parts into one shifting unit. I live by the stains of ink On my fingers, combinations Of letters expanding and contracting, Harnessing the intangible, The abstractions that are My thoughts, wrenching each Into form, line, break. Flowing words, searching For the engine of rhythm. What I would give For my hands to bleed the way His hands bleed, grease dripping over That intensity of kon and heat, Vibrating along the elements Of machines. We wait. Locked between gears, And words, metal and lines, Our blood spilling into these contraptions. Copyright Joy Kress, 2001 Winning Entry Frederick Hartman Poetry Contest
