Jan. 23, 2002 News Page 5 Construction progresses on campus Organization Megan l\irner Reporter A wire fence encloses the va cant Carlton Building, cement, dirt and workers surround a marked- off area near McMichael Science Center and a barren field sits ad jacent to Rhodes Stadium. The signs of construction can be seen throughout the campus as Elon begins building new resi dence halls, renovating an aca demic building and constructing the Irwin Belk Track, all due for completion by the fall 2002. These new projects are in cluded in the “New Century at Elon” plan, which calls, for in creased residence hall, arts and science space. This plan super sedes the “Elon Vision” project, which funded the construction of the most recent additions to Elon such as the Carol Grotnes Belk Li brary in 2000. Part of this long range plan to build up Elon’s campus in the next seven to eight years includes the building of the Academic Village. The $2.7 million facility will be located south of the McMichael Science Center and will contain residence halls, faculty apartments and teaching space. Two of the eight pavilions will be completed by August 2002. The pavilions will each house 22 students and one faculty member in each build ing. According to construction manager Neil Bromilow, the pa vilions will be theme oriented, “which would lend itself to a full immersion experience for stu dents.” “This will be a unique living and learning environment for stu dents to live with other students committed to the same academic pursuits and will also provide a phenomenal experience to live in the same building as a faculty member,” said Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Resi dence Life David Blackman. Although the Academic Vil lage may be useful to some stu dents, sophomore Patrick Griffin said that other students might not benefit from this type of living ar rangement. Griffin said that the current residence halls are “like your own little secluded area away from classes where you don’t have to deal with academics.” Freshman Rachel Tippett, how ever, said that an academic village “forms more of a community and you get to know professors even more than you would in just a nor mal classroom setting.” See CONSTRUCTION, .page?..
