Page 6 News Feb. 14, 2002 from PRIORITIES, page 1 “The Honors Program had to be addressed in terms of its structure.” The revisions allow students to choose from a larger variety of classes that are more challenging and unique. The program’s new blue print also includes more student in teraction, Wright said. “Elon is such a strong school,” said Lambert. “Honors program work is one of the most important things that is being done through Academic Affairs.” In addition to the changes in hon ors courses, Elon now offers a doc torate program in physical therapy and a School of Information Tech nology is being developed. Another major change imple mented this year is the Academic Village, with tow of nine builidngs under construction on the south side of campus. Projected to be completed in the fall, these two buildings will hold student housing and academic areas. On the community front, the Acom Coffee Shop added outdoor seating, and the new Aramark-run restaurant will open downtown at the end of February. Because of a record number of applicants. Admissions is cutting ac ceptance to 1,100 this year, and in coming freshmen will have an aver age SAT score of 1,130 next fall. Many faculty changes have also occurred this year, including an ex panded faculty and staff orientation program. A grant from the Teagle Foundation meant to strengthen small liberal arts colleges, has ex pired, but Elon officals will continue with the model introduced by the grant. “This is a great program that helps all new faculty and staff become more attuned to the community val ues that Elon possess,” said Dan Anderson, director of University Relations. Full professors will also get a pay increase next year to close the gap in pay between Elon and Davidson College professors. This increase will help Elon remain fourth in professor pay behind Duke, Wake Forest and Davidson. In the technology section of the list, Elon will continue to offer Web- based courses during the 2002 Sum mer Session. Eleven courses were taught online last summer, and 15 are being taught this summer. The uni versity as also implemented Elon OnTrack, a program that allows stu dents to access their transcripts, course schedules and open courses online. Seniors can place their re sumes and exceptional coursework on the Student Life Web site for oth ers to view. While the majority of the institu tional priorities list has been com pleted, there are some components that will be carried over to next year. One example is the university’s progress toward Phi Beta Kappa sta tus. . Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s leading advocate for the liberal arts and sciences in institutions at the undergraduate level. It supports the goals of society through academic, social and community-based pro grams. “Getting Phi Beta Kappa could take up to ten years,” Anderson said. “There are so many components that need to be considered. What we are really working at now is getting the things that schools with membership have here on Elon’s campus.” '^iie & &Nifni€r Gift Baskets Gounnet Foods Unique Gifts and Cards Burt’s Bees Products Large Wine Selection Gift Certificates Huffman Ann Elizabeth St First State Ruby HOLLY CENTER MALL Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. - Closed Sunday Local Delivery and UPS Shipping 336-585-0877 - WE ACCEPT ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS - Are You Enthusiastic about Elon?
