Junior Christian Wiggins was elected to the office of president, Katie Townsend to vice president, Kate Stejskal to secretary and Brian O’Shea to treasurer. Wiggins won with 55.2 percent of the 1,148 votes. His opponents, Katie Gosselin and James Moyer, received 35 and 9.8 percent of the vote, respectively. Wiggins says his first goal as SGA president after the initial tran sition is to unite the senate. “If we come together, we can create the students’mission,” he said. “It’s up to the students to put us together as a team. But now it’s up to us to work together as a team.” After months of planning. Wiggins says he’s ready to begin the term. “In one way, a weight has been lifted off, but there is an enormous amount of pressure that goes back on because you are representing the student body,” he said. Wiggins says he’s glad the pres sure of campaigning is over. “Anytime you are too confident, you lose,” Wiggins said. “I think maybe I was questioning myself more than students were. I was ask ing myself, ‘Did I meet enough people? Did I hang up enough post ers?’ You have to put the trust in the students.” Wiggins from Whittier, N.C., has served as executive treasurer for the past two years. He also is a member of Pi Kappa Phi, a head resident and a business fellow. Elon faculty devote years to Elon Lauren Melfa Reporter Students who caught a glimpse of the recently-released longevity list realized many professors have committed numerous years to the education of Elon students. Ex tensive research has been done to determine why students come to Elon, but a question that is rarely asked is why Elon’s faculty and staff come here and why they re main here for so many years. Some professors are simply synonymous with Elon; Dr. J. Earl Danieley is one of them. Danieley has held several positions at Elon From student to dean to president, Danieley has experienced many changes and challenges in his 61 years at Elon. He did not even want to attend Elon when he enrolled. However, by the end of his first semester in the fall of 1941, Danieley had fallen in love with Elon. In fact, he fell in love twice, when he met his wife of 54 years, Viola, here as well. Danieley said that he loves Elon’s “community of friends.” He enjoys the faculty, students and the general friendly atmosphere on campus. After witnessing many transi tions over the years, Danieley re mains a proponent of change. He sees the change to university sta tus as a chance for Elon to gain prestige and expand. “I never want to get so old that I stop being thrilled by change and expansion,” he said. At the other end of the spectrum, Dr. Alan Russell and Dr. Maurice Levesque are relatively new to Elon’s faculty. They have both been here for five years and, like Danieley, enjoy certain aspects of working at Elon. Russell, assistant mathematics professor and first year mathemat ics core director, came to Elon be cause of the family atmosphere and small size.
