Page 14 • Friday, August 23, 2002 NEWS Orientation Team members point freshmen in the right direction Orientation cont*d from Page 1 The Pendulum Although it meant giving up the last weeks of summer, Rector said she was excited to work on Orientation Team for the second 1 year. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s really worth it,” Rector said. “It’s a lot of fun, and it’s great to talk with the freshmen.” The team’s training focused on the three themes of this year’s ori entation, awareness, skills and direction. An awareness of sur roundings, as well as time-man- agement skills and a sense of per sonal direction, are all key to sur vival at Elon or any college, Luther said. Tlie three themes will be intro duced to new students in their ori entation groups, led by orientation leaders, or OLs. The groups meet four times throughout the four days of orientation, and later reunite as Elon 101 classes. The first group meeting, at 6 p.m. today, introduces new stu dents to Elon. The OLs summarize the most important parts of surviv ing in college, such as making sure to buy books, put money on Phoenix cards and go to class. The second meeting, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, reemphasizes President Leo Lambert’s academic message. After Let’s Get it On, a presen tation on social issues, the orienta tion groups will meet again at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to talk about the production. The final meeting, at 10 a.m. Monday, sets the tone for the school year by giving students a “final exam” about orientation. “When it’s all over, I want stu dents to have a good understand ing of who they are and who they are at Elon,” Luther said. “The ori entation groups have fun, but they don’t just throw a Koosh ball around and have a good time; they work together to achieve a com mon goal.” As are the orientation groups, the other orientation activities are meant to highlight social and aca demic life at Elon. Academic- themed presentations such as New Student Convocation and the aca demic message are paired with social activities such as Elon Under the Lights and the Orientation Fair. “Everything we do is impor tant,” Luther said with a grin. “We give these kids a lot of opportuni ties to meet new people and give them a chance to hang out. It’s a one-stop shop - we do it all at the same time.” For more information about New Student Orientation or about becoming a member of next year’s Orientation Team, call extension 7777.
