Life does exist outside of Elon:
Breaking through the university bubble
Andi Petrini
A&£ Editor
The town of Elon surrounds
the university’s campus. The
campus occupies more than
500 acres at its center, and the
population of 6,738, accord
ing to the 2000 census,
expands more each year, much
like the institution’s.
The most recent construc
tion in the town is the ongoing
construction of the N.C.
Highway 87 bypass, which
will connect Highway 87 to
Cook Road, cross Westbrook
Avenue and U.S. 70, where
there will eventually be an
exit off Interstate 85/40 when
completed.
For more than 100 years,
the town and the school
shared the name Elon College.
When Elon became a universi
ty in 2001, the town dropped
college from its name.
With the expansion ^of the
university’s campus, the town
is expanding also to provide
services to its residents, with
property being annexed in the
north and west sections of the
town.
Elon is governed by a six-
member board of aldermen:
mayor Beth Schmidt, mayor
pro tem Richard Keziah,
Phoebe Harrison, Lawrence
Slade, Ronald Klepcyk and Ed
Swing. Town manager Mike
Dula and clerk Sabrina Oliver
complete the governing body.
The board recently
approved the rezoning and
conditional-use permit for 210
Lawrence St., which sits off of
Haggard Avenue across from
Danieley Center, for the con
struction of apartment build
ings that can be rented to stu
dents and staff.
The town and the university
have recently entered an
agreement to construct two
new entrance signs for the
town. The university will pick
up $8,000 of the signs’
$16,000 price tag.
