SGA tables smoking boundaries on campus Austin lameson Reporter A resolution that would encouragc Elon administrators to prohibit smoking in entranccways of campus buildings was tabled by the Elon Student Government Association Oct. 24. The bill was presented by Brian Gill, sophomore class sena tor and chair of the Student Issues Committee, and Nick Rust of the Academic Council. The resolu-. tion will be discussed at the meet ing Nov. 7, as senators raised questions about the university’s current policies. The resolution, drafted after student brought concerns to the Student Issues Committee, called for the enforcement of clean air zones 25 feet from entranceways. At the meeting, senators asked about current regulations. “How well is this issue researched? Ruwart spealcs on Kevorlian, assisted suicide Allison Clark Reporter Author and renowned scientist Dr. Mary Ruwart advocated for physician assisted suicide and the patient’s freedom ot choice last Thursday evening. Ruwart is a former pharmaceu tical research scientist and associ ate professor of surgery. She was a contender for the 1992 Libertarian Party vice-presiden- tial nomination and ran for U.S. Senate in 2000. She wrote the book “Healing Our World: The Other Piece of the Puzzle" with the help of her sister, Martie, who lived with Ruwart as she fought a losinc battle with cancer. In her speech, Ruwart stressed patients’ freedom of choice. She said advocates of physician- assisted suicide argue that patients who are terminally ill often want to die; they want to be free of pain and suffering. It was See Ruwart p. 9 Sports Editor A new law school may rest on the horizon for Elon University, as the New Century @ Elon Plan continues its expansion. The law school will address the portion of the plan dealing with the develop ment of new and distinctive grad uate programs, Provost Gerald Francis said. The addition of a law school remains in its fledgling stages, and President Leo Lambert assigned Francis to head an upcoming feasibility study to examine the costs of facilitating a new law school on campus, as well as the annual maintenance costs of the school. The study should also provide an assessment of the market, the mission and the expectations of North Carolina’s American Bar Association. Francis and Lambert could not comment on how the money for a law school would be acquired. “We are only at the stage of putting together a committee to conduct a feasibility study to examine all issues surrounding the establishment of a law school,” said Lambert. Elon hired Leary Davis, the founding dean of a law school at another university, as a consultant, Lambert added. Davis is on the faculty at Campbell University.
