Andi Petrini A&E Editor David Gray fans will not be disappointed when they pick up his recently released “New Day at Midnight.” The album contains the same lyrical ballads that Gray listeners come to expect from the artist following 1998’s “White Ladder.” “New Day” combines key boards, acoustic guitars and piano with love-song lyrics to produce an album rich with Gray’s talent. His sultry voice gives listeners a greater appreciation for the term melodic, and listening to the album is as soothing as sun beat ing down on one’s face. Many . of the songs are as upbeat as “Babylon” off of “White Ladder.” “Caroline” com bines the same three chords with an eclectic keyboard rift wedged into the song. The lyrics carry the listener until the end: “The state I’m in / Got goosebumps on my skin / See review David Gray the water. I'll jump right in / Your heart so free/I’ll face the facts / It’s paper on the cracks / Girl till I got you right / Back here with me.” “Kangaroo” sounds a little like “Sail Away” off “White Ladder,” with a slightly slower- paced melody. “Last Boat to America” introduces a new sound to Gray fans, with Tim Bradshaw playing the lap steel guitar in the background. Gray wrote all of the songs on the album, and his lyrics are con tinuously powerful in a “tell it like it is” mentality, heard in each track on the album. His songs focus on losing and finding love. “Real Love” is a true ballad celebrating the joy of finding the right someone to love. “The dawn in all its majesty / Is stealing me away / The dawn in all its hon- esty/Is turning me to clay / And through the bars of iron rain / Way beyond and back again /1 hear the voice of Eden cry / Lift me up I’m walking on high / It’s real love.” “New Day at Midnight” proves Gray hasn’t lost his unique sound after heavy radio play following the success of “White Ladder.” The relaxing album is a perfect mellow-mood setter, and the unobtrusive sound is tempting to pop in anytime of the day.
