Martina McBride and Alan Jackson kept the crowd pumped Friday night, as each proved why they were selected as the best vocalists in the country music industry this year. The half-filled coli.seum was brimming with excitement, as men and women proudly wore cowboy hats, and four girls in the front row displayed T-shirts that spelled out “A-L-A-N” in red sequins. McBride was brilliant, per forming almost every song off her “Greatest Hits” album. She opened with “Wild Angels,” and kept the right blend of energetic tunes with her ballads through out her hour set. “Concrete Angel,” “A Broken Wing” and “Where Would You Be” were beautiful as the .'S-foot-l-inch artist belted out the lyrics. During “Valentine,” the large video screens behind the stage played a video of McBride with her two daughters. The only cover the Kansas- native performed was a heartfelt rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” which took country fans’ breath away. Following a 30-minute turnover, Jackson took the stage. Photo from BBC Alan Jackson greeted by .screams from audience mem bers. The video screen behind the stage played Jackson’s music videos for each song he performed, including the CMA-nominated “Drive.” The crowd went wild for “Where I Come From,” as video footage shot around Greensboro was shown. The UNC-G water tower, NASCAR Cafd and Four Seasons Town Centre were fea tured, drawing cheers of approval from the audience. Jackson followed up the song with his award-winning “Where Were You,” which was perfonned first at last year’s CMA’s, as an artistic response to the Sept. 11 attacks. Jackson’s 13 years of coun try music were well covered during the hour-and-a-half set. His honky-tonk roots were con veyed in “Summertime Blues” and “Chattahoochee,” then went ,p.sychedelic for “Don’t Rock the Jukebox.” Off his CM'a Best Album of the Year, “Drive,” he per formed the title track and “Work in Progress,” which were both met with cheers from the audience. As an encore, Jackson and his band jammed to “fill in.” The instrumental solos gave Jackson plenty of time to sign last-minute autographs before leaving the stage.
