Page 8 • Thursday, February 27, 2003 NEWS The Pendulum Bubble Bitching offers lighter look at campus a We've been making these jokes for three years. Now we’re just putting them down on paper. ^ ^ — editor. Bubble Bitching ^ . Lindsay Porter News Editor Sure, you’re proud of the school you attend. Bui do you notice those httlc idiosyncrasies around campus? Arc you lired of the seriousness of Elon? Want to poke fun at something you may have seen around campus? You are not alone. Tlie editors of Bubble Bitching, Elon’s new underground newspa per, say ihey feel the same way. “It’s just good-natuied ribbing,” said one of two Bubble Bitching editoi's, who both wished to remain anonymous. “We’re not being cynacists, we just thought it would be funny.” Bubble Bitching first appeared Feb. 7 in news stands around cam pus. The premier issue was satiri cal, with an article about a dcad- squirrel pcrclted on a lamp post and a manufactured picture of President George W. Bush driving a customized Cushman niainte- naiKie cart. The publicatioti also featured factual concert listings for the area. Tlie editors said it was important to them to include the concert listings to advertise some of Cheir favorite lesser-known bands that would be perfonning in the area. Tltc editors of Bubble Bitching, one a senior business major and die other ii senior communications major, said their new publication is the result of “a very late night aiKi lack of sleep.” Tliey came up with the idea last fall, but decided to wait until spring when they had more time to devote to the publica tion. Above everything else, they said their primary purpose was to amuse themselves with the content in Bubble Bitching. “We’ve been making these jokes to each other for three years,” one editor said. “Now we’re put ting them down on paper.” Both editors agreed that they were confident in tlieir decision to produce Bubble Bitching, and were not nervous about whether or not others would fiiul it funny. “We just figured if people didn’t tliink it was funny, llwy wouldn’t read it. We didn’t anticipate it would go over like this.” Tl>e highly popular first issue disappeared out of newsstands shortly after Bubble Bitching was distributed. Tlie editoiTj said e-mail reac tions to tlie paper have been pleas ant surprises. From what they have heard and read, people on campus have enjoyed tlie change of pace. The editors also confirmed that members of tlie Elon administra tion have contacted them to com pliment tliem on their success. Tlte Bubble Bitching editors said they are not looking to become a news source on campus; instead, they are more interested in taking a different perspective than other campus media, such as The Pendulum. “We want to ofl'er more of a day-to-day look at life at Elon,” one editor said. “We’re proud of Elon. We pay to go to a private school just like everyone else. But it’s amusing where some of the values are placed here. It's important to laugh at ourselves.” As for right now. Bubble Bitcliing will continue to be pro duced biweekly, and will stick to its initial one page format. The editors said while the attention their work is receiving is great, they were never in it for the recog nition, and are not looking for any sort of advertising revenue. “We aren’t looking for awards. We’re just looking to have a little fun.” Contact Lindsay Porter at pendu- lum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
