Page 6 • Thursday, May 1, 2003 NEWS The Pendulum Breaking through the bubble Eagle grounded by The Carolinian staff A former University of North Carolina at Greensboro student fraudulently gained access to several state concert venues, according to UNC-G’s student newspaper The Carolinian. The student, Brett Eagle, was also a former photographer for the newspaper. Eagle was able to scam his way into such acts as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Britney Spears and Guster. Eagle used forged Carolinian letterhead and a fake e-mail address to obtain free passes to the shows. He claimed he was the features editor, a position that does not exist with The Carolinian. Using the fabricated letterhead. Eagle wrote, “As features editor for The Carolinian ... I am submitting this request to you in regards to our obtaining a photo pass and review pass to cover the following event...” The exact value of the tickets and passes he received is unknown, but The Carolinian estimates the total upward of $1,000. Carolinian staffers foiled Eagle’s scam, and it is not yet clear as to the punishment he will face. Brockovlch challenges Beverly Hills, 90210 Erin Brokovich and Ed Masry, made popular by the film starring Julia Roberts, have filed claims against the city of Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills High School. The claims were filed on behalf of 25 alumni of the high school who claim they contracted cancer from gases that exist beneath the campus. The claims are a prelude to impending lawsuits. “We have over 200 alumni with cancer and the rates go out at over 20 times the nation al average,” Masry said. “I've never heard of a rate like that in any lawsuit I've handled. You get to two or three times the national average - that's huge.” CNN.com reported that school officials could not immediately be reached for comment, but an “environmental fact sheet” published in March said South Coast Air Quality Management District, a regional environmental agency, determined the campus was with out toxic gases, Brockovich and Masry said they think 50 years of drilling for oil on school grounds emitted toxic levels of such chemicals as benzene and hexane. The case was brought to the attention of Brockovich by a former Beverly Hills student at a book signing. The alumna told Brockovich about the high number of cancer cases among her former high school classmates.
