The Pendulum Sports Thursday, September 11, 2003 »Page 23 Phoenix fall to Spartans 2-0 Andrew High Reporter The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans (2-1-0, 1-0-0) men’s soccer team continued their dominance of their series against Elon, taking a 2-0 victory Sept. 7 against their new Southern Conference foes. UNC-G owns the all-time series between the teams, 7-3, and allowed the Phoenix (1-2-0,0-1-0) only three shots on goal, and six overall, by using 10 players to defend out of a 4-4-2 formation. “We’re a very young team,” UNC-G head coach Michael Parker said. “For us it’s more a question of getting our things straight. We’re looking to get shutouts, and then taking whatever comes from there.” The Phoenix didn’t get off their first shot of the game until 13:32. Two of Parker’s young players helped get the Spartans on the board as the team got its first goal at 23:28 when freshman midfield er Mike Richardson took a pass from fellow freshman Scott Jones and knocked it cross field into the net. It’ll happen. —Mike Reilly, men’s soccer coach ^ ^ Sullivan led the Phoenix in shots, tallying three. Elon head coach Mike Reilly said the team’s offense, which has produced three goals in three games, still needs some work. “We were just not in sync,” he said. “We knew they were going to play a flat defense. We just didn’t shoot, and we were over passing at times. We’ve just got to sharpen up in the final third of the game. We beat them on possession but possession doesn’t win games. You’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net.” Reilly said the team must be prepared for tough games against better competition in the Southern Conference. “We know it’s very strong,” he said. “Every game is going to be a battle even on your home field. At one time [the Southern Conference] had two weaker programs but The Citadel dropped out and VMI went down to the Big South.” The Spartans second goal of the game came when another fresh man, Randi Patterson, corralled a lob from teammate Adrian Worthen and slipped it past Elon goalie Kyle Ostendorf. Ostendorf did however finish with six saves. “We really didn’t let down,” Reilly said. “Obviously the second goal hurt us. He took a ball of his chest and put it in. That’s life in the Southern Conference. They put a lot of money in their program where as we don’t.” The Phoenix’ next game will be at Furman, Sept. 13. Reilly said he expects the team to improve. “We need more consistent finishing and that’s pretty much it. We’ll score some goals this year. It’ll happen.” Contact Andrew High at pendu- lum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
